Hope for Gene therapy cure

I still like to think that I'm hopeful of a cure sometime in my lifetime. Although I do admit that I am a bit jaded. I've been told for 20 something years, that we're only 10 years away from a cure. All I can do is wait and hope that in another 10 more years there will be a cure.

I am very excited about this. I have been hearing about this for some time now and it gives me hope for my daughter's future. I want this so bad for her and all of you. This forum has become very important to me. You have all helped me so much! I come here every day even though I may not respond often.

One thing that does worry me is that we too have been told that within the next ten years we will see some major advances being made. I believed this and it gave me hope. But from some of the previous posts it sounds like this has been said often in the past?

I know you have to be realistic but I am hoping and praying this gene therapy works for CF and that you all will benefit from it.

BTW guys I call dibs on being the leader of the mutant super powered villains. I think it's only fair because i'm not all right in the head ya know. Friday will be "pizza fridays" (on me), and I will have a light work load deligated amongst our most deranged: Monday 3pm-6pm (I refuse to get up early and work, after all we can do what we want, we are super powered villains!) is general villainous behavior day - We can put ketchup packets on long flights of stairs downtown, Remove parking tickets from cars, and then go to mcdonalds and ask for salt free fries (they have to make a new batch) and then ask for salt for our fries when they hand them to us.

As for the rest of the week, I have faith in you guys to cause chaos as you see fit, but NOT before 3pm k?

As for powers and a name, I want to be named Lunger. And my power will be to shoot out my lungs at unsuspecting people, they envelope their entire body, and suck out all of their oxygen to replenish mine. What do you guys think?

Yes I know it's been said in the past but the real issue here is that finally the ability to actually modify stem cells has become a relality... One genetic disorder has already been cured proving that is it possible. The fact is that someday there will be a cure for CF as well as other genetic disorders and we can only hope it comes soon. When the zinc fingers have been optimized for CF there will be no chance of turning on the wrong genes and say causing cancer so the issue then becomes finding a good delivery mechanism which there are many possible canidates so far many which have already shown promise and some that in gene therapy trials have actually improved patients conditions.

I recall when they first discovered the CF gene they made it sound like it would be months until they found a cure. Then as the years past more people who had such high hopes became jaded at the CF conferences. Those who put less faith in their early predictions weren't nearly as disappointed. Having such high hopes can sometimes be a bad thing in my opinon.

If every time you buy a lottery ticket you started thinking about all the things you are going to buy the day after the numbers are announced...you would be one very unhappy person. But if you make do with what you have and keep praying...then you are never disappointed. I hope this "5 year" talk doesn't get anyone's hopes up too high. I too recall when the gene was first discovered...lots of talk then too. But we can all hope and pray for the best...god willing a cure will be found.

Hypothetical question: Would you be willing to be cured of your CF with this technique, if there was a 95% chance of it causing some form of cancer in you immediately, and then taking your chances fighting the cancer and possibly surviving? Thats a weird thought.

As long as it wasn't brain cancer I'd give it a shot maybe.

--I know this sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory-

Okay on a serious note I have to say that I think drug companies run the world and as there would be no financial profit in curing CF and other disease, they will not allow this to happen. Either through lobbying the Gov't, tweaking results so the FDA won't approve, whatever, our disease is a money making cash cow for them and they may be interested in coming up with more helpful and very expensive treatments to make us feel better and extend our life (that way they make more money off of us) but they're not looking for a way to cure it. I think they'd prefer that never happens.

maybe I should also be in therapy?

The idiots that say "Winning the lottery was the worst thing to ever happen to me" make me want to puke. You can be an idiot with 100 dollars just as much as you can with 100 million dollars. I live fairly well on my limited income, the only thing that would change for me if I won the lottery would be a couple new not too high end toys (I am a guy ya know, we need toys), and i'd open a local bar that's focused on live music (rock n roll in general) where people can always go and see a good live band and eat food and drink good beer. That's about all I want to finish my life with $$$ wise. If I was Bill Gates kind of wealthy i'd run around and buy every single thing of woods I could find and tell urban sprawl and strip malls to go to hell, and never sell regardless how much they offered.
