Hospital birth questions

Hi there,

I had a question for all you gals who have already had babies in the hospital. How does it work with all your medicines and treatments and everything? I know if you're admitted for a tune up at a CF hospital, they give you all your meds and prescribe your CPT and everything, right? (Sorry, not much experience in the "inpatient" department). So what happens when you're just in to have a baby? I would just assume bring all of my own stuff into the hospital with me. Do I tell them that I brought all my own stuff in? Were you able to do all your aerosols, CPT, and pills without any problem? I just don't know what to expect and what to bring.

This is something to discuss with your doctor (OB). The only inhaled meds I was on w/ Logan was my albuterol inhaler and advair. So when I was admitted my OB wrote orders for respiratory therapy to see me every 4 hours or whatever, I can't remember completely. He also wrote for me to have my inhaler and other meds (adviar, zithro) at my bedside. I didn't take my vest since I didn't feel I would be doing it during labor or the day after. Maybe I would take my quake if I were having another hospital birth so I had something I guess.

As it turned out I declined respiratory therapy every time they came. Didn't feel like doing any treatments. I didn't even need my inhaler - labor did wonders for my asthma, LOL. I left the next day after I had my son. FTR this wasn't a hospital familiar w/ CF at all.

My advice is to have a birth plan and include your CF stuff in it. Make sure your doc writes orders for you to keep all your meds at your bedside.

Should I end up w/ a hospital delivery this time I'll be asking for early discharge - maybe even hours after. If not then definately 12 hours after. So I don't plan on taking anything other than my inhaler.

I don't know what meds you're on - when I had both my kids I was only doing aerosols and enzymes - and I found it much easier to just not say a word about it and do your own meds yourself, otherwise - what a freaking hassle. That's just my opinion - but I think Caroline has a great idea about putting it in the birth plan and then going over that with both yoru OB and your CF doc.
