Hospital for BOTH

Well, first off, I scored a laptop so I'll be able to be online this weekend.

Second, Jesse was scheduled to come in to start his new medicine but they decided to admit Josh after looking at his PICC. It looked very gooey and raw. The IV team pulled it so it won't get infected but he'll have to stay tonight to make sure. Turns out he's probably just allergic to the tape. What do you guys do about that?

Everyone was so psyched to see how the boys looked since last time, especially Josh. He gained 1 1/2 pounds since May (even without eating much). So as long as Jesse toterates the medicine, it looks like it we'll be home on Sunday.

Thanks for all your kind notes on my blog.

I hope things work out for both of them! And that the PICC's will last as long as they need them too. I believe they can use different tape if they have a reaction to it.

I am allergic to adhesive tape, and normally they use tegaderm without any type of white adhesive at all. For whatever reason adhesive that is colored white makes my skin react worse than others. Also see if they could maybe change the dressing more frequently, maybe twice as normal. I know that really makes my arm feel better because I still get itching on the skin around and under the tegaderm.

They have also offer to use paper tape on me but for whatever reason the paper tape doesn't seem to stick to my skin well, so I decline. I have had a hard time this last hospitalization with itching and bumps around the IV site and where the tegaderm was on my skin- since it has been removed. I know it is not infected because the site itself looks great and is mostly healed. The skin is just so irritated from the adhesive.

Maybe you could talk to his doc and see if there is some type of allergy pill he could take - I have never taken one myself but if it really becomes a serious problem I would ask ... the worst they can say is no.

You said in your blog that the nurse changes his dressing every day. That would make anyone raw! Have them dress it once a week instead.

Nice that you were able to access a laptop Jane. I know some question whether with extended IV treatment that maybe a port would be best for the boys but my brother was against getting one for his extended treatment and so they put a PICC in. He was very fortunate that it lasted him a year, just long enough for him to complete his treatments. I never thought it would but it did. I hope the allergy to the tape clears up for Josh quickly and that the boys do well with their PICC's and treatments. Sending good thoughts and prayers.

She only changes it because it keeps peeling off. We'd be much happier if it was once a week!

so what's the status on taking them on vacation?</end quote></div>

We haven't asked about that yet. We are waiting a few weeks to see how Jess does on the imipenem. If Josh keeps have trouble with his PICC, it might not be a good idea. We'll see.

Jane, I hope they both start feeling better soon! What a bummer to deal with all that PICC stuff. Ugh!

Have the doc mentioned getting a port?
