Hospital sent out an e-mail............

Hey Everyone,

I just got an e-mail from my hospital. Well I never gave them my e-mail address (they have never asked for it, and it's not on any paperwork, etc.) so I don't even know how they got it first of all.

Well the issue is, my e-mail is my name @hotmail.com. Doesn't that go against patient confidentiality, since my name is used and not somebody@hotmail.com? I'm just not exactly happy that anyone can see my name, especially when I never gave them my e-mail address. (it's a whole list of people that got the same e-mail)

Granted, I have posted my e-mail address on here but that is ME doing it, so I am obviously ok with that. I just don't like that my name & e-mail are out there floating around.

Have any of you heard of this before? Isn't that against confidentiality?

Thanks,
KELLI

I can understand your annoyance and confusion, but I am not 100% sure it falls into confidentiality. This is a good ?? tho.....anyone else?

So the email wasn't just to you it was a group email? They definitely should have bcc'ed (blind carbon copied) everyone. Definitely slap them on the wrist for that one. Whenever my hospital emails me I get an email that I have a message on the hospitals email server. It's very protected, requiring additional logins but does make things more private. After all can we really trust "hotmail" and such to be confidential with the content of our emails? ....no. That point aside, they definitely shouldn't have disclosed your email address. They easily could have "hide" it.

Kelli,

Yes, I would think this violates HIPPA laws if everyone can see your name. They probably weren't even thinking about that... Yikes! They should have used "Bcc" instead to make the recipients "blind" to everyone else. Maybe suggest this to them for future emails. Many many people have their names as their emails, so you're probably not the only one who feels violated by their oversight. Don't know if there's anything you can do about it, but maybe someone on here has a suggestion. Sorry this happend to you.

kelli, I agree - they should have been confidential and bcc'ed all on the list, whether or not your name is in your email !

Personally, I don't have any confidentiallity issues - they can say my name during clinic or hospitalization, however I still wouldn't want my email out there available so that every tom, ***** and harry could add me to their junk email list! That would be the same as passing out your phone number as far as I'm concerned.

Edited: LOL, they blocked that middle name, didn't think about that - Ok, "every Tom, Duck, and Harry"
;-)

OK so I always saw the bcc on my email....

since this evidentally is how I receive emails that are addressed "to undisclosed recipient", how does it work?

Sorry for the dumb ?? I had never known what it was.
