I cough up blood up blood every now and then, Mostly when I am sick. Sometimes its streaks and other times it just blood. It really freaked me out the first time I did it but now its become "normal" I tell the docs if they ask and they've never told me not to cough or stop activity.

Should I be going out of my way o let the doctors know when I cough up blood? Is it really that bad?

When we go to clinic, we fill out a form. One of the items to check is hemoptysis yes or no? SO we tell them there.

When it first happened to Josh we called, terrified. The doctor acted like it was no big deal, which calmed us a lot. I haven't called again since its been small amounts.

Is there an amount that requires a call?

I dont tell the doctor unless it is a lot, lasts (streaking) for a few days or was right around the time of my visit. BUT they understand I know my body & have enough experience that they can trust me on that!

Anything more than a teaspoon I am to call the doctor. I am also to stop Hypertonic Saline and vest treatments until I am 24 hours free of blood. Now this does not apply to streaking just pure blood coming up.

Usually my dctor or nurse ,whoever fills out the sheet asks. I have been coughing up blood for years, usually small amounts like a teaspoon or 2 maybe a tiny bit more. But as someone who has had a massive bleed i'll tell you this.... I had very obvious signs that a big bleed was on its way and ignored them. I hadnt had a bleed in 9 months then one day i had about a teaspoon come up. Then the next day same thing. This went on for one full week each time being a little more in volume than the last. Then one night i layed down to go to sleep and felt the gurgle and this time the bleed was much bigger, more like about 3- 4 table spoons ( i didnt measure it but it was a good amount that should have scared me into calling the Dr. right then and there). I just spit it out in a can that was next to me, rolled over and went to sleep. Next night while sleeping i rolled over on my left side and Whammo, the blood was coming and it was a LOT. I called 911 and got myself to the hospital. I didnt write this to scare you, i'm writing this to let you know, if you are seeing it go on every day for too long, or increasing amounts each time, you may want to call your Dr. Don't ignore the signs if they are there, or even if you think they are there. Better safe than sorry.

I only let my doctor or nurse know if its excessive amounts. I've had major hemoptysis in the past, and I know my body well enough, so a tablespoon or such is no big worry to me. I start to worry and freak out when its non-stop copious amounts, or heavy streaking for more then a day.

My doc usually knows because I call for a vitamin K script. So that of course gets recorded, and every time I visit my clinic they ask if I've coughed up any blood. But if you're coughing up a lot of it, you should at least give your doc the heads up.
