go to your profile....scroll down a bit and there is an option to pick a pre-made "author icon" or insert your own picture.

if you use photobucket for any of your photos online, you can resize them there (they have a lot of good editing options) and then re-save the edited version to your desktop to upload as an icon. (Icons have to be 120x120 pixels or smaller.)
Another free program you can download that I really like is PIXResizer. You can get it here: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm">PIXResizer</a>
