How do you AFFORD children when you have CF?

It is tough... I will not lie to you.

We are without health coverage right now... hoping to solve that very very soon. I want to apply for our state health insurance program in the next week or so. We homeschool so that we don't have to pay high schooling costs (private schooling would break the bank). We pinch pennies where we can and live without a lot of frills.

We have lot of debt and just work on it as we can. Kiddo, hubby and I wears hand me down, and consignment store clothes. The grandparents help us with kiddo's clothes and school supplies. I make alot of my gifts to friends and family. We don't buy things at regular store very often

We don't own a home-- we rent and have a very understanding landlord.

Luckily, kiddo and hubby are very healthy so it is just me with the medical bills.

preface this by saying that I do believe good health insurance is a must or it could cripple any income level and we are very fortunate in that mine is about as good as it gets. That being said we are aggressively working on our finances so that if/when I can no longer work and my long term disability runs out we can cope with whatever insurance we are dealt whether it be state disability or through hubby's employer.

I feel that we as a nation make alot horrible financial decisions and alot of others in our country might be able to suffer through that way but our health and related costs and tenous income ability make being financially secure more important than ever. Most US highschools allow you to graduate without ever knowing how to work a budget, I know I did.

Hubby and I have been decent in the past but only through taking financial peace university by Dave Ramsey have we really seen the bigger picture and understood all aspects of personal finance. We are living on bare bones and working aggressively towards getting our school loans and house 100% paid for so that when harder times do come we will be 'self insured'. I woudl highly encourage you and everyone to read the book "The total money makeover" by Dave Ramsey or just go to daveramsey.com and surf around a bit. We are also meeting with a financial lawyer later this year to "CYA" so that if I do become disabled or die medical bills cant destroy what we are building.

If you have not checked out my blog about Dave Ramsey journey I would encourage you to do such. The whole preface of everything is to never buy anything you cant afford and to afford it you have to pay cash and to always live beneath your means and save save save.

oh and the nuts and bolts answer to your questions along with good health insurance we have a detailed budget and we know where every penny goes, we set a certain $ amount for items such as clothes food etc and stick to it, we have an emergency savings account, all of my daughters clothes (and some of ours) are bought grom garage sales, all of her toys are garage sales, I have most of her christmas toys purchased already from garage sales (does a 2 year old really care if its in a box? I think not and all the toys and books I found show zero wear), we car pool to save money on gas, we are selling our truck to buy a beater and one that is good on gas, we keep our heat low in the winter and AC low in the summer, we dont eat out unless it comes from our food budget or personal spending allowance, hubby works odd jobs on the side, I clip coupons plus do a coupon sharing thing iwht friends to get mroe valuable coupons, I would be happy to help by sharing any other budgeting or money saving ideas anyone is interested in.

one good way to save on groceries is to visit www.thegrocerygame.com it can save you ALOT if you do you can get a 30 day trial for $1 if you try this out I can help you with things I have learned slowly and please PM me and I will send you my email so I can get credit for the referral.

I don't know about in different state's but here in Michigan there is "Childrens Special Heath Care". It is for children with cronic heath proplems including asthma and cf. If you have cf they will cover you for life even if you are an adult when you apply. This covers everything related to the disease and you do NOT have to meet any income requirements. That is the nice thing about it. For all of you out there strugling with medical bills I would look into it for your state. Not a lot of people know about it so it might be something you havent heard of befor. Right now we are strugling because we cannot apply until we have been diagnosed BY A SPECIALIST. We have a pulm. apt in july and I have paperwork to take with me and I know I am going to be applying for either cf or sever asthma.

I was one of the first children on this when I was a baby due to sever asthma and back them it was called crippled childrens heath care. I am only 24 so the program isnt realy that old either.

Ah wow, this is NOT true.

#1 The program exists but there ARE income requirements. you can find them at michigan.gov but I dont remmeber exact link. It is only fair it should go by income but you DO have to pay on a sliding scale I know the lady in charge of a large part of the state regarding this program and no amount of 'finesse' would get our income into the bracket so I know this is not true and it was when I did not have as good of insurance.

#2 this program has been on the chopping block for 3 years now with dear democratic governor granholm it is only through extensive lobbying each year that it has made it through and they are cutting back what they will pay for it is only a matter of time before it is gone completely.

#3 there are less diseases now that qualify you and asthma is NOT one of them. There are some blood disorders, CF, diabetes (both my sisters had it) and some cancers I believe. CF is one of the only ones that cover for life, the rest do until 18 and the life for CF is one of the primary things on teh chopping block now that life expectancy is rising.

There are 5 other states left in teh coutnry that have similar programs. It is a wonderful program but poorly managed and in severe jeopardy of extinction I would NOT recommend relying on this long term; a backup plan is essential.

I am only 24 so the program isnt realy that old either.</end quote>
