How do your lungs feel?

Hello.

I'm curious how my fellow CFer's lungs feel when they increase their amount of exercise? What's happening to me is that I recently upped my exercise regime from 3 times a week to 4 times and now includes weight lifting every single time I go. So, instead of just running 3 times a week, I'm now running 4 times a week AND weight lifting for each particular muscle group 4 times a week with my run.

So, I've recently been noticing my chest just kinda feels "tighter" and like I'm coughing up tons of crap. Not when I'm exercising, but later in the day and the following day, etc... I also have kind of an "ache" in my chest. I'm thinking its maybe from coughing so hard and so often and getting so much gunk up compared to usual.

I know what muscle fatigue feels like, and I don't think that's what I'm feeling in my chest, but rather more of a feeling when I'm coughing really hard and my lungs hurt from it.

.... But, my question is what "side effects" ya'll notice when YOU increase the amount or intensity of your workouts? Do you feel the things I'm describing? I can't imagine I'm getting sick, cause I have lots of energy to do my 4 days of hard workouts and just don't feel overall "sick"... so, I don't think that's it. But, I'm curious if these symptoms sound like what happens to other people?

I've been working out (in a stagnant workout regimine of 3 times a week running) for years, so is it possible its just the extra amount that's bringing gunk up and making my lungs sore? Is it normal to not really cough much during the workout, but tons afterward and the following day?

Thanks for any info./experiences!

I believe varying your workouts will help the lungs in different ways and only you will know but sounds liek that is what is happening. I do not get the feelings you describe but everyone is different. How goes the 02 monitoring? Oh and btw you sohuld not work out every muscle group every day, you should alternate so you have at least a day of rest in between i.e you could do legs and back mon arms abs tues etc or you say 4 days a week so you can do all groups then rest the day after but Itihnk I remember reading that way is not as effective if you get tired before workign all the groups out well.

take care, I have been varying my workouts too (and trying ot start runnig) and I woudl love to swap excercise routine regimens etc if you are interested!

All I can offer is that yep, you are supposed to vary the muscle groups if you are doing them back to back- like, Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs. . But if you are doing them with a day off inbetween, that should give them a day (you need at least a day) to recover and build up muscle. You build muscle because when you lift weights, you get tiny (microscopic, if I am remembering all this right ) tears in the muscle, and the new, stronger muscle is built up with the "repairs" (if you are building muscle mass, and not just doing low weight repetions to keep your strength up).

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here- I'm going by memory!

Thanks, everyone.

Yes, I vary my muscle groups and days in between. My DH actually has done personal training for people (and is very fitness savvy, I think... LOL) so I kinda follow a program he set up for me. Here is what I do every week now:

Sunday: Cardio and biceps and back

Tuesday: Cardio and triceps and chest

Thursday: Cardio and shoulders

Saturday: Cardio and legs

Sometimes I do have to do days back to back, but according to personal trainers, and what I've read, since I'm working different muscle groups every day, it doesn't matter. Most personal trainers will develop a M-F training plan that incorporates different muscle groups every day back to back (you wouldn't be able to hit each muscle group every week if you didn't). By doing that, you're still giving EACH muscle group an entire week to rest. Ya know? Make sense?

----------------------------------------------------------------

But, my initial ? was mostly about how your lungs feel when you add a day to your workout, or add weights, etc... I can tell I'm building muscle, so that's not really a concern. But, I'm mostly wondering about what ya'll experience as far as coughing more, chest soreness, coughing up more crap (and thicker), etc....

Anyone else have experiences with this to share?

Thanks again,
