Breanna had to go back into the hospital in July 23-Aug 1.

1 week stay in hospital and then PICC at home for 1 week. She was on Bactrim via PICC and seriously 2 days after PICC removed she began coughing up stuff again.

Trip to the CF Clinic and another 2 week round of oral Bactrim, did great, cleared up everything.

Again, a week after finishing the oral Bactrim she began coughing up stuff again. She is now on oral Bactrim again, double strength for 10 days.

Breanna cultures MRSA, she is Pancreatic Sufficient, FEV1 ??? Highest has been 89%, lowest 52%

Breanna was just diagnosed last October at the age of 9, she has been hospitalized 3 times since for PFT's dropping. It just seems she is sooooooooo unstable and it has been more progressive since October.

Any advise ???

Thanks to all of you !

I also culture MRSA & in my opinion she either needs to be on a maintenance dose of Bactrim daily or she might need a combo of meds to knock it down. This is what I do. I did have a break for a few months, but inbetween that I was having lots of problems with my pseudomonas that required a lot of iv therapy.

Now remember that CF patients cough stuff up regularly. That is the nature of the beast & hence the need for daily treaments to keep the lungs clear.

I would address the issue with the doctor!

Thanks Melissa, I understand we want to encourage coughing the gunk up, but my concern is that she has been on IV Bactrum and (2) 2 weeks of oral Bactrum double strength in the past 1 1/2 months. She lasts for about a week doing well after a course, but then she starts feeling bad, looking bad and PFTs dropping. Have your Docs tried to eradicate the MRSA?
