How to practice for pft's

Emily started with an acapella before getting the vest. Oh my she hated that thing... it wore her out and eventual non-compliance was part of why she moved along to the vest as quickly as she did. She tried- really she did- but could not keep it up long enough to get any kind of therapeutic session out of it.

We should pull it back out for pft practice, I see...

Bek has been doing pft's for a little over a year now and still has trouble with them at times. I was just talking to my mom about her inability to achieve a good pft on July 3rd. I believe it ranged from .76 - .82 and at the time, she still had MRSA in her lungs. They were trying to attribute her low numbers to her age. However, when we went back on the 21st, she got a 1.08 and we got the results from her sputum culture on Thursday. No more MRSA! Doc also said he didn't hear anything in her lungs this last time.

I don't think her inability to achieve a higher number was due to her age. I think it was due to what was in her lungs. We are the only one's who know our body the best, and I think she just didn't know how to express that she wasn't able to do them as well as she had in the past. Does that make sense to anyone else? She might only be 5, but she's a smart girl and knows what's going on.

We've been practicing with the party blowers, bubbles and with a harmonica. DS still hasn't gotten the hang of it yet. But we'll have to try the cotton balls.

I should try the cottonball game, or bubbles, with Emily using one of her neb mouthpieces... but have her blow into the round connector end rather then the flattened end she usually puts in her mouth, to better mimic the feel of the pft... see if that helps!

Otherwise, she will want to blow with pursed lips, which is just not helpful (for her) for practicing for this.
