How to practice for pft's

This topic hasn't been discussed in a while so I thought I'd bring it back up.

- My son enjoys playing with the paper party blowers which require a quick burst of air just like pfts
- Also blowing out candles is good practice
- Make a game of blowing cotton balls across a table - draw a line where the cotton goes and then try again and see if he can blow it beyond the line.

Most of all make it fun!

These suggestions are age appropriate for 2 year olds...with some practice they will be right on track for blowing pfts by age 4.

Good suggestions. Emily is 8, but only got dx'ed last year so is still fairly new to doing pft's. I like the idea of practicing with the party blowers. She does better blowing with pursed lips but when she has to blow open-mouthed on that tube she has trouble.

The sustained breathing out (hitting that 4 second mark!) is so hard for her. She's been having to do eeg's with the over-breathing part so sustained blowing is nothing new to her and it's always been hard to do without exhausting her. A very short hard blow is easy, but a longer, smoother exhalation is very difficult for her to manage. They keep telling me 'oh she'll manage it with some practice'... but she has been trying to blow long and hard for 6 yrs now with eeg's (on that pinwheel) and the breathing peters out to a whisper after a couple seconds. Is Emily the only kid with this trouble even at this age?

I have not thought of the Cotton ball game in years..
My Mother use to have us do that when I was a little boy..
Funny , it was years before I realized it was more than a child's game.

it works and fun too as I remember ..

One thing we are using with M is that the CF center gave us an Accapella.

It works both for CPT and also is the same mechanism and process as a PFT so you kill one bird with 2 stones <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
