HP placard

Josh was able to get a health parking pass for college last year. The health office just told us it is only temporary and Josh needs to apply for a handicap placard for his car this year.

On the form it asks current FEV1 and O2. Does anyone know what the cut-off is?

Thanks

In Georgia the law is one of the following:

1) FVC in 1 sec of less than 1 liter. I don't know 'predicted' volume for Josh's age/size/health/etc so I can't convert to a FEV1. Maybe you can get the actual FVC from a PFT report?

2) 'Arterial O2 tension' of less than 60mm on room air. I've dug and can't find a way to compare to 02% other than that 'normal' O2 tension should be >100mm. Not much help on this one, sorry.

3) Can't walk 200ft w/o stopping to rest.

I have one based on the fact that I cannot walk more than 100 feet without stopping for a rest.

I only use it on the days that this holds true or when I am really sick.

I don't qualify under the "respiratory" limitations.

I have a placard that i hang from my rear view mirror. Outside appearances I look okay. But, I cannot breathe much of the time and have to stop to catch my breath when I am sick. People still look at me, when I park there, like they wonder why i have one and the few times that people have said anything, I just look at them and say, Look, i need new lungs, what's your problem? or something to that effect because it just irks me how people judge you if it is a disorder they cannot see. My sister has Multiple Sclerosis and uses a walker. Does that mean that I have to use one to park in a spot.... NO!! I dont know your laws in the state you live in, but in Indiana, the doctor fills out the application for you and you take it to the License Bureau. We have a choice of a placard that can be hung on the mirror or a license plate. Both are good for some odd years. Good luck!

I really don't think Josh qualifies. The health office person has limited understanding.

I asked my doctors once to get one, granted I was higher FEV1, but they didnt really like giving it to me b/c they wanted me to walk the distance lol.

I hate walking on campus it is really really hard for me (I was probably around between 47 and 55% when I wanted to get a temporary one after my BO surgery. I have a harder time for class obviously b/c I am always late, due to my cf routine lol but I dont mind walking after class, I can take breaks etc.

My friends used to know when I was coming b/c my cough would echo down the halls haha (remember I said I was always late lol)

Also, my school I just this year started useing the elevator for 3 floors only b/c I need o2 now for exhurstion and I was too lazy to bring it to class (my bf was dropping me off since it was an evening class and didnt want me walking in the dark). But before that I would use the stairs and I would have to pause at every level and hack my brains out (and hope I didnt pee my pants ugh). But I would just spit it in the next trashcan I saw lol

remarkable people never say anything or give me looks that I see.

sorry kinda off topic too lol

the other thing I remember, is that in my state I believe it was just he walking 200 yards w/o a break (which I think I can do most days still so I try to push myself if I can but I'll admit I get dropped off a lot <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> lol )

and also, i hated it at my school b/c I had to pay the DMV for the pass, and then buy one from the school too... it was super expensive and it pissed me off.
