HS

You will need a prescription for the HS. My prescription is for 4ml
of 7% HS -- to be nebulized twice a day. I
purchase mine from Foundation Care. They will make it in
individual sterile doses so it is very convenient to use. Their web
site is www.foundcare.com and their phone number is
877-291-1122. If you are prescribed 5 ml or 6 or 7 etc...they
will make it up for the same price. It costs $36 (for a total
of 60 vials) and that includes free shipping. As far as
working better than pulmozyme... I am not sure how to answer
that except to say that I am very pleased with how the HS is
working. I am able to get up mucus much more easily than I
otherwise would have and my lung just feel clearer. Currently I am
doing both pulmozyme and HS. I highly recommend the HS.

HS is cheap compared to Pulmozyme. I have used both & FOR ME they work much differently or I feel the affects much differently. HS gets me coughing the stuff up. Pulmozyme is more subtle with just thinning it out. I do notice more of a difference when I dont use Pulmozyme then if I dont use HS. Some doctors replace one with the other, but my doctor says even they have similar functions, they also each have their own benefit!

if you get it iwould get the type that you mix yourself, that way it is cheaper (its not hard either, i do it twice a day).

I think it is the best med i use, it is a must for me along with my vest two times a day! I love it! it helps break up everything in your lungs so you can cough it out.
I think its great you should def try it !

Melissa is right that the HS is a great medicine and it is not hard
to mix but Is it really that much cheaper then the premixed
individual doses? To make the proper % you have to buy
the 3% as well as the 10% vials. Once you open a vial to mix
you must then refrigerate the leftover portion and throw it
out after 24 hours because once opened contamination
is a real issue. The premixed requires no refrigeration and
no chance of contamination because each dose is sterile. Pre-mixed
is certainly more convenient and knowing that it is sterile makes
me feel better about breathing it in. Just something to
consider.

I can not get the same response as everyone with the HS. It does not make me cough that much just a little but no more than what all the other nebs I do. All the other nebs make me cough just as much. I am NOT seeing these great results and I am totally bummed!!!

Do you think staying on it helps in the long run or is a short term thing?????

Jennifer, what type of nebulizer cup are you using to administer
the HS? If I use the sidestreamer I don't cough at all but if
I use the Pari LC Plus, which is what you are supposed to
use, I do. The amount I cough varies from
lots to hardly much. I am usually more productive in the
morning than in the evening, which makes sense because of being
inactive while sleeping. I also find that
for several hours following treatment my mucus is thinner which
makes it easier to cough it up. I would give the HS a good
trial run before you give up on it, at least a solid month, then
decide if you are getting any benefit from it. Even when I do
not cough up much I still feel like my lung is clearer after
treatment.

I use the Pari Pro Neb cups. And yes I agree I will give it a go! I am scheduled to be on it for the whole month of June so we are nearing the end. In Aug I have my CF appt. so I will ask then if I should continue for more time.

Thanks for the info!!

I use the saline and pulmozyme both. I don't think you can really compare the two personally because the saline is jsut saline and pulmozyme is an antibiotic of sorts (I may be wrong but that is how I understood it to be).
The saline makes me cough a bit and helps thin stuff out for me to cough the junk up easier. Pulmozyme for me helps to calm the coughing a bit. I have been taking pulmozyme since it first came out in the clinical studies/trials and I love it. I can notice a complete difference in my breathing and how I feel when I do not take the pulmozyme (I ran out of a prescription for a few days one time and it was horrible). The saline I have not been taking as long and can't tell that big of a difference when I do not take it other than I don't cough as much or get as much stuff up.
