Hunching over?

Ever since, eh, I was a young teenager my "comfortable" posture is very hunched over at the shoulders.

Even when I try to straighten out my posture I still looked hunched over. Physical therapists say that my lung function will improve if I improve my posture but I've found that it's harder for me to breathe when I force myself to stand straight up.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I've noticed that the more excercise I do and stretching and things like that, the better my posture gets. But otherwise I have horrible posture, although it did improve after my transplant but once I got chronic rejection and my lung function started decreasing again it started to get worse AGAIN! My transplant dr even noticed it between monthly visits....she said that the worse my lung function got the worse my posture could get. She said it has something to do with making it feel easier for you to breathe when youre all hunched over, even though you arent taking in the maximum amount of air into your lungs, which you would be if you were standing up straight.

....hope this helps.

i feel your pain. I need much better posture. It seems like such a challenge to stand up straight and put my shoulders back. Especially when we cough so much the natural movement is to go forward and over.

When I am at the gym I do stretches to help 'open up' the shoulder area. It appears to help a little but I have to be thinking about it all the time in order to keep my shoulders back and standing up straight.

I was hunched over all the time. It makes your chest cavity bigger and gives you more room to breathe. I even hunched over the handle of the shopping cart when I would go shopping before my tx.

Almost immediately after my tx, I no longer hunched over the shopping cart and walk standing straight up. I do still have a problem with letting my shoulders relax though.

I'm the same way, the docs and physical therapists are constantly telling my to straighten up and try to stretch my chest and shoulder muscles. I find that along with the naturally tensing from coughing I carry all my stress in my shoulders so I go for a massage about every other week and that really helps loosen me up for a while.

I feel myself trying to straighten right now just reading the post lol. Every time I'm in the hospital they insist I go for physical therapy and they're always on me about my posture and tell me a bunch of stuff I'm supposed to do for it. I try to keep my shoulders pulled back and my head up, but when I'm sick, it just doesn't happen.

It's natural, and a known medical fact, that it's easier for people with air trapping to breathe when they're hunched over. The position even has a name (I learned it in nursing school). It actually helps get a little more airflow into air-trapped lung. I definitely find myself hunching over as well just because it's more comfortable. It is not uncommon for us to get curvature of the spine as well from being barrel-chested and/or osteoporosis, which makes it even harder for us to stay straight up.
