Hyper-Sal 7% by Pari and Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid has been paying for my son's hypertonic if the pharmacy fill it with 10% and .9% vials and we mix it here at home each time. But I just changed pharmacies and asked them to order in the Hyper-Sal by Pari and found out that Medicaid will not cover it because they are not contracted with them.

I just contacted Pari through this site so hopefully I'll hear from them in a few days - for now I was just curious if anyone else is on Medicaid only and if you have been able to get this product covered.

If I continue to get the 10% and .09% it only cost $3.00 for the copay with Medicaid. But if we fill it with the Pari product already mixed and quite a bit less hassle over all it costs us $48.00.

Thank you

I am not on Medicaid.....but, my center was asking me about how much I pay for mine and commenting that they are quite annoyed that medicaid will not cover this for people. They are trying to make a case for it and work with the system to help them understand the benefit and need for it. It is a large center and hopefully they will be successful in getting this for people. Best of luck to you.

I don't know what state you live in, but I live in TX and Medicaid pays for Hyper-Sal 7% (the pre-mixed vials). I don't know when they started covering it as we've only been on it for about six months, but we've never had a problem getting it covered.

It is absurd that they won't pay the $48.00 to Pari... Look what they are paying for other drugs... and the Hyper-Sal made more of a difference in my daughter's PFT's than all the other drugs put together (including Pulmozyme which is 100X more expensive)...

Good luck... I'm sure they will eventually cover it, I just hope it's sooner rather than later so it doesn't make life even more inconvenient for you. It's not like you don't have enough to do already... :)

We are in ND. Yes, Medicaid has paid really well on everything else (like Pulmozyme) too. I don't think it is so much that they don't recognize the saline as beneficial but rather they just don't have the contract in place with Pari (the provider) of the medication.

But that's good news that TX can process a claim for it - shows that it can be done... maybe it's just a matter of making the aware of the need. I do know that they recently changed the rules about paying for saline and will now process it, just not the Pari stuff.... so they do recognize it as a treatment that needs to be covered, but so far they are only paying for it if we buy the 10% and .9% from an established provider with a contract.

Thanks for the reply!
