I found this interesting (about me and exercise, trolls need not read)

So after my first few days at work, and covering what I thought had to be massive distances on foot and also on bike, collectively, I went and bought a Pedometer from walmart for like 6 bucks. It says it is very accurate, laser calibrated, blah blah blah. This was my first time using one, so I followed the directions, and basically took 10 normal steps in my house and then measured the distance, then divided by 10, to get the actual distance of my average stride. My stride (length of an average step) was slightly under 3 feet (like 32.4 inches or something). I was very curious to see just how much distance I was covering in a regular 8 hour shift.

Well I kept my eye on it after each round, and the numbers REALLY started to add up. At the end of my shift, after hitting my car to go home, here is what it said:

Steps: 17,409

Miles: 8.517

Calories: 1078.7

I was pretty surprised the numbers were that high, but just to make sure they were right, I tested it indoors between rounds with a preset distance and what I knew was X amount of my steps. 3 out of 3 times it was dead on accurate. The mechanism that makes it work is a laser calibrated type switch, that senses the motion of a step, and counts that as one step. So you could tip toe slowly forward and it would register it as a step, so it doesn't appear to be way too body mechanic/motion based, but more a sensitive controlled fall step based.

This result was only after maybe half of the rounds that I normally make on say a weekend 8 hour shift. I have yet to do my normal weekend shift, which would be 12 hours, and constant rounds, given the above numbers were cut off at around 6 hours, it would be safe to say the above numbers would be doubled for a 12 hour weekend shift...So we would be talking about 35,000 steps, 17 miles, and around 2156 calories gone through in one day.

I also do this at a very brisk rate, that at times (lack of people = me doing it as quick as I can tolerate and still do stuff properly) would be considered a brisk job/cardio workout, so my heart is greatly benefiting also.

People greatly take the distance the walk in one day for granted, I know I sure did. If you are bored and want to keep track of such things, go grab yourself a pedometer from walmart for 6 bucks, and see just how many calories you burn, and how much distance you cover in a day.

The distance for this result would have drastically increased if the bike was removed and I had to walk that as well (which I have done many times). The pedometer registered each pedal motion as one step, but of course with one pedal motion, you are going much farther distance wise than a regular stride...So the overall distance if conformed to just walking, would have been quite a bit farther.

I also have a fair sweat going on when I finish, and i'm never short of breath while doing this, and have brought up some gunk while doing it. My goal is to lose atleast 10 lbs, preferably from my gut area, and cut out all non nutritive/excessive/sugar laden calorie sources to help speed that goal up (except for some beer on my day off). Anyways, just thought i'd share, and theres no way on earth i'm gonna be doing cardio anymore at the gym <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
