ibuprofen ??

Though there are no many concluding researches on the effect of pain relievers, I find that its a field worthy of more study. I notice that when I take ibuprofen, I feel relaxed for most of the day. I even stop coughing and my breathing improves. However, does this mean that the mucus would accumalate inside my lungs and consequently increase the chance for an infection? Usually, when I take it for a couple of days and then stop it I feel like I have some huge emptying to do. It confuses me much, but the doc didnt give me any view against it as long as its benefiting me. I would like to hear your opinions on the subject based on experiences and medical advice.

i live off of ibprofen (or however you spell it), the reason being that i have major sinus/polup problems. My doctor is having me take 1,200 mg of motrin in the morning and another 1,200 at night. Thats 6 motrins in the mornign and 6 at night. I no its a lot, but my doctor did blood tests, and supposedly it will delay my sinus polups from comming back. I had 5 surgeries on my nose to remove polups by the time i was 15. i love ibprofen, haha, don't no what i'd do with out it.

I LOVE ibuprofen. I have been on it for years and never go without it. I take 800mg TID and really feel awful if I don't. My wife actually jokes that I am psychologically dependent on it. Maybe, who cares I LOVE IT, at least it is not crack!

My daughter was using Ibuprofen until her liver enzymes shot way up - once off the Ibuprofen they returned close to baseline. Be very careful - it is toxic to the liver as well as the kidneys.

Interesting stuff. Have they established a specific dose of Ibuprofin for pwcf? Has anyone here had success with lesser amounts? (I'm not sure my stomach's up for the 1200 mg/day routine.) I've found lots about this on the internet, but no conclusive recommendations.

I love it too!! I used to take so many that my mom was always saying she was worried. I took it allot in highschool. Before they became a "cf drug". I took them if I was going to a party, dance, bar where ppl would be smoking and it would make my morning the next day so much easier. Just goes to show you how "intuned" to our bodies we are!

I like to take "IB's" for just about any pain. I try to not take more than I have too. It seems like to me that if I take them too often they stop working as well, or i have to take more for the same affect. So far, knock on wood, i dont have to take anything every day for pain. I am sure that day will come...but not yet. I always have to take them with milk or some food though otherwise my stomach burns.

John,
Sounds like to me that the lungs are still full of stuff when you are on the ibprofen, but the sensation that causes you to cough does not happen when you take that medication. I would be concerned about having to do all that "catch up" coughing when you stop takeing the ibprofen.......my question.....too ....like you are thinking is.....what is going on in my lungs when all that stuff is sitting in it and I am not coughing it out......I do know that we have to control our inflamation in our lungs and ibprofen is a good way to do that for most of us. It does work well for me when i pull a muscle from coughing, but i dont take it to slow down my coughing unless it is that dry unproductive coughing. We have to get that stuff out of our lungs if we are able to cough it out. But, if we have swollen airways and the stuff is not getting coughed out and we are just coughing and feeling sufficated with an unproductive cough...i vote for the ibprofen then.......i hope i made some sense......just my two cents from observation and personal experience. Nice name, by the way!

Be careful taking this if you have any bleeding problems. It will cause you to bleed more. I have hemopsys(sp?) probs so I can take 1 but after that I am super careful.

Ibuprofen is a wonder drug for me. If I take about 400-800 for a muscle ache, or fever, or anything, pretty much every symptom of this damned illness goes away, often until the next day or further. (I can tell when I'm *really* sick when this doesn't happen, and even the almighty Advil can't help.) The only reason I don't take it every day is that, with such powerful physiological effects, I strongly believe there's gotta be a catch, something like waking up one day to find your liver/kidneys spontaneously combusting. Otherwise, I have very little doubt that something like nebulized NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) like it, which would bypass the gastrointestinal and (most) toxicity side effects, will one day be a standard CF treatment. (No one get any ideas--putting something like over-the-counter Motrin into a nebulizer could result in horrible lung scarring, for all I know--let the researchers figure it out first)

I love ibuprofen as much as the next person, but be careful. It will do a number on your smaller intestines. Nothing you would feel, just severe damage that you will find out about later. Limit yourself. And 1,200 mg is WAY too much for a CF'r. Intestinal problems are in your future if you keep that up.

Ibuprofen works great for me. My mom gave me it when I was really young and I would be having one of the crazy coughing fits, and for some reason it relaxes that irriation and I finally sleep. I have been doing that lately because I am trying to get over a cold, and I am really sick of coughing.

Ya know we all should study this.....awhile back I had read about how ibuprofen in large amounts {of course watched by a doctor} that they felt it was really helping people with cf. Its been awhile ago but I remember thinking that I should consult my doctor about it. But I do remember it was in larger amounts while in the hospital. Something to read and look into of course. deb
