I am looking for advice/suggestions from anyone with ideas. Andrew is two and a half weeks into tobra and ceftaz ivs. A few days ago he developed chest pains, some quite severe, others just a dull ache. He says his lungs feel heavy. We have tried and tried, but other than a plug yesterday, I don't think he has much more to cough out. The clinic had us try extra cpt, etc, for a couple of days, but when his low-grade fevers (99.5-100.8), spiked up to 102.6 on Thursday night, I knew we were going in regardless to see the doc on Friday. Our doctor is out of town this week, so we saw someone else who we really like, but I am stumped. While we were at the hospital, he made this miraculous recovery...felt great, no chest pain, no fever (although I had given him Tylenol), his xrays showed improvement, his pfts were great...The doctor actually wanted to pull the picc early because his lungs sounded so good. She said the line may be infected, causing the fevers.
I said I wouldn't pull the line until we could prove it was infected. They ran cultures on the line and so far no infection has shown up. I was hesitant to pull the line iwthout knowing exactly what is cuasing this chest pain and fever. I just feel like there is something more going on. And of course, within two hours of being home, the fever came back and the chest pain started again.
Any thoughts? No pleurisy, no pneumothorax, xrays look better,,I'm completely stumped! Is there anything I may be missing? My instinct says it's a different infection, but his films look good. If you have made it this far in my post, you deserve a reward! Thanks!
