Improved Coughing Technique

I just wanted to let y'all know if you haven't read Amy's blog on her visit to Dr. Warwick, in it he talks about his coughing technique. I know this has been brought up before in conversation here, but I've been trying it, and it really works. I would urge all to at least try it-its not going to hurt. And it may work for you.
This coughing technique makes me bring up a quarter sized blob every time. I bring up alot with my chest pt anyway, but I can actually feel the mucus coming from my lower lobes, and that's the difference.
I had a check up Monday-my small airway # went from 30% last time (8 weeks ago) to 40%. BIG difference. I'm sure his cough contributed to that.

Anyway, the letters are long and I haven't even finished them yet, but just wanted to say they are worth your time.
(Thanks to Dr. W and Amy too for writing it.)

Try it guys!

Maybe I'm not understanding it. Christian, Can I tell you how I do it and then you tell me if I'm missing something.

Okay I breath in just a regular breath (1 second) fake a breath out (1 sec.) but don't let any air escape, then breath in again (1 sec.) and again fake a breath out. In again, out again, etc. etc. I keep doing this and a cough isn't induced after a while I'm out of breath and just need to breath!

Oh and I know you are a big fan of huff (as well as I am) do you cough a normal cough or blow out hard / huff after the successive inhales?

Lauren, I copied the following from the letter Amy posted. Read it slowly. You do not breath out after you have taken in a breath. You take in a breath, pause, then taken in another breath. You continue to do this till your lungs are filled then a cough will occur. I find this technique extremely productive and not exhausting to do.
I hope this helps you:

"Fill the lungs using a serious of regular breaths with a normal pause without expiration after each regular breath. The important parts are the holding all the inhaled air in the breaths and then simulataneous pause so that the inhaled air can equalize throughout the lungs and air flow from the full alveoli to the less full alveoli and also enlarging the airways that are coated with non expectorated sputum. As the lungs fill closer to total lung capacity enough air will get behind the ucus in the airways and a cough will "happen." Practice filling the lungs may be the best way to clean the airways because a cough always happens even in "normal" lungs because all lungs have some sputum.

Jem, This is what I was doing. Thanks for explaining it again. I'll just be persistant and try it somemore. I found it worked this morning. Do you find it works all the time or only when you're especially junky?

Maybe I was pausing to long. Are you breathing in longer than your pause between each breath?

Sorry, Lauren, I misunderstood your post. It works best for me while I am doing my hypertonic saline treatment, which I do during my vest treatment 2X a day. I pause between breaths for about 2-3 seconds. There was a time when I stopped coughing during my HS treatment and I thought I was just getting used to it so it wasn't working very well anymore but with the Warwick coughing technique that Amy posted it is now much more productive. I also try to do the coughing technique throughout the day on and off just to keep things moving but it is not as productive at those times but still better than doing nothing. I used to think not coughing was a good sign but I don't think that anymore. Having one lung coughing can be more difficult and it is important to keep the airways open. I feel much clearer now with incorporating this technique into my regime.

I hope you got my pm that I sent yesterday morning.
