Increasing enzymes...

New member
I have found that over the last few weeks I have had alot of problems with digesting food. My usual dose of enzymes, Creon 20's, is usually around 3 with what I usually eat. Lately, I have had alot of pain and gas after eating even with that dose so I increased the amount of enzymes. That has helped with the pain some, but not to the degree I would like. I am going to run this by the doc tomorrow not just because of the increased intolerance to food but also because I have lost about 7lbs in less than 2 weeks, which really sucks as my weights have been stable for some time. I am wondering if this has happened to any of you guys and what your docs had to say about your case. I worry that my pancreas is inflammed or just crapping out more. Out of curiosity, what have you been eating?

Two things do come to mind...whether you are taking enough water in your daily intake, and whether you had been including enough veggies and simple to digest fats. One thing that is (or should be) a known fact is that potatoes and the likes happen to cause excess gas. I found that rice actually causes LESS gas, which explained why I had such fewer gas-related stomach aches since I've been here. though I also had seen somewhere that when the stools are not forming, it may suggest malabsorption.

If you are eating correctly, drinking enough water and it still causes trouble, taking a few extra enzymes shouldn't hurt.

However, another thing that comes to mind is when I've gotten a routine, and I end up "botching" it up on weekends or long holidays, I tend to get stomach aches more frequent as well because it seems my stomaches routine also goes "south". So, if you either don't have a routine, or are currently out of one, then that may be an added reason for the stomach aches...stress can also be related.

Hope that helps you out.

Thanks Fred for the info, you are very helpful...I have been eating the run of the mill stuff for me anyway...I eat fruits, apples this time of the year...yogurt, milk, meats such as beef (I tend to stay away from really really fatty stuff because of the effects on me, salami is def. a no no!), occassional ice cream, cereals....nothing too exotic or out there. I agree that weekends are a bit more touchy because I tend to eat out or take out more often so it is sometimes hard to gauge how much fat is in something until I am writhing on the floor moaning "shoulda took more enzymes..." I am concerned because nothing really has changed as far as my diet and now I am having more problems and weight loss. I take about 5 creons now with my meals, more if there is more fat content. I hope that works, it is too early to tell right now...Just when I thought I had things squared away as far as meds go, I literally have not had to change my meds for a few years now but I guess my body is telling me different now. I've heard Creon is one of the more effective enzymes. Also, if Creon20 is the higher number...not much further to go, unless they came out with Creon50!!
I didn't see much fiber added in your diet, Jenn. And, if you are losing weight despite eating the same or more than before, that's suggesting to me you may be getting malabsorption issues...I hope not!
Usually, I also find that changing from beef to chicken, sometimes even fish (bleh! for those anti-fish fans!), removes a lot of fat-digestive issues. (Yes, and stay away from the fried stuff--another NoNO!)
Only recently, I've been having more American Cereals cause I've got the money and luxury of ordering them from overseas now!
However, I did have a bit of a shock while in the states with the foods there. One had a lot to do with my biorhythms being on Osaka time, but the other was the food. Fortunately, I brought some extra enzymes that worked for me, and my problems were minimal.
Hope just another "tweak" in your diet and upping your enzymes will do...
