Infant CF or coughing in general

We were told to learn our child's cough -- is it post-nasal, reflux, bronchial... DS rarely coughs unless he's coming down with something and he's 5. Never coughed as a baby except a few times when he got an upper respiratory infection -- he wheezed -- and we were told to "beat that cough out of him". He also had more sinus issues his first year -- stuff would run down his throat and make him cough...

It has taken me a while to figure out what is normal for my daughter; The norm for my daughter now is she rarely coughs unless she is getting a cold or sick. Our Doc did not want us to do "postural drainage" with CPT which is what you call it when you tip them head down in different positions , the thought being you would help move the mucous out. The reason is risk for aspiration, especially in an infant when all they really eat is formula or breastmilk, and they eat every 2-3hours so the liquid could go from the stomache into the lungs from being tipped. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks everyone. Am I correct in interpreting your responses that CF individuals don't necessarily cough unless they are sick? Since learning Ellie has CF, I just expected that she would cough all the time (i.e., at least daily)....her next CF appointment is later this month.

I took DS in for his two month checkup and shots, he had a horrible cough. He'd throw up his formula. I asked his pediatrician, the local cf doctor about it and he told me it was normal. "It's what 'they' (cfers) do. They cough". A few weeks later we took him to his primary CF doctor in the city who YELLED at us. Didn't we KNOW he could end up back in the hospital?! DS had bronchitis, was culturing enterbactor choclae (sp).

We were told that DS should not be coughing and to learn to "know his cough"... More of a wet cough... If he does start coughing, we're supposed to call him and to increase CPT/Vest to beat the cough out of him.

Usually DS coughs when he starts coming down with something. Usually doesn't get a fever, sometimes is just a little off -- sleeps more and his eating decreases.
