Infant CF or coughing in general

My 2 month old daughter coughs intermittently throughout the day. She seldom does the horrible gagging-type of cough that I've heard is common among CF individuals. Essentially, I'm wondering if it's "normal" for an infant with CF to cough throughout the day. Is there ever a period where CF persons don't cough? She's only coughed up mucous twice since diagnosis at 2 weeks old. Are our CPTs insufficient if she isn't coughing up more? If she's coughing, doesn't that mean she's trying to get something up? These may be simple questions for many of you to answer...I'm still a newbie. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Her CF doctors don't recommend CPTs with her head in a downward position, but wouldn't it seem logical - regardless of her age?

Hi Newbie: These are great questions for your doctor.
You will probably learn what is normal for your child for coughing. But it is best to listen to your doctor and some of your own maternal common sense. If in doubt don't. Ask questions questions questions of your doctor . Write them down and ask .... away. It is different for every individual. That is why it is hard to answer your question directly.

Good Luck.

I agree with the previous poster. Each child's coughing is different. It is important to watch your child to determine what is normal for her. Then if her cough changes you will know to tell her doctor.

My daughter does not cough except some when she uses the neb.

Hey Katie,

I agree, I think every baby is different and your intuition will be a good way to measure this. However, I think that most if not all CF babies have some level of congestion. I was flipping thru my mom's journal from when I was a baby (before I was diagnosed w. CF) and she wrote that I was constantly congested. I'd ask your doctor, but chances are your daughter is just fine. Hope you can figure out the cause of the coughing and find a way to reduce it!
