Influenza A

On October 8th I felt sick, so I rested and took it easy. The next day I felt much better. However for the rest of the weekend I felt tired, vomitted, had a fever, etc. Wouldn't cough during the day, but would be up at night coughing. I assumed it was the flu. Finally on Wednesday of last week I woke up to coughing up blood (not new, but with the fever I was worried) and so I went to the ER.

They did a bunch of tests, and found out I had influenza A. They put me on Tamiflu. They also put me on IV antibiotics... Tobramycin and pipercillin and tazobactam(sp?). I've been on these for 5 days as well as the tamiflu medication and feel much better.

Now I personally felt the antibiotics were excessive. One of the doctors was going to just watch me over as I just took the tami flu for 5 days, but then another doctor suggested I stay on IV antibiotics for 3 weeks. However my CF doctor has been away and I finally talked to him today, and he said I can make the choice of whether to go on orals instead or stay on the IV.

I chose the orals because of the ease of them, and because I want to get on with my life because it was just the flu. I also feel that the 3 week antibiotic regimen was unnecessary for me just having the flu.

What are your thoughts?

One of the primary issues with the flu is the secondary infections that people are getting -- bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, etc.

IMO, best to be on some sort antibiotic, but if you're feeling better and the orals are working...

I took a spirometry test before I left today and my lung function went up considerably... is this common on IV medication? My FEV1 went up 10% and my FVC went up 15% from when I was admitted to when I left. I kinda wish I stayed on the IV's to see how high it could go... oh well.

It also sucks that I started the inhaled cipro study a month ago, saw promising results and I have to stop 2.5 weeks in.
