Influenza ever land you in the hospital?

My daughter Hayley is sick and we went to clinic today. She is having an awful cough, some retratctions in her neck, rujnning nose, sound crappy, you get the point. They did the nasal test for RSV and Infulenza. RSV was negative, but Influenza was positive. We are taking oral AUgmentin and watching her for 24 hours, but if she does not improve they will most likely admit her. So I was just wondering if it is common for Influenza to land CFers in the hospital with complications?

And yes, she did get the flu shot, but I guess it wasn't for the right strand! UGH!

Thanks in advance for your replies!!

I came pretty close once. I probably should have been admitted but my doctor trusted me to get to the ER if I thought I needed to and to take good care of myself at home. I'm not suprised they would want to admit her. The flu can be really bad for someone who already has resperatory problems so if sudden compications arise she can get imediate treatment in the hospital. Good luck! I hope she gets better soon.

I was in the hospital in 2000 for flu accompanied by pneumonia. I probably wouldnt have had to go in if I would have recognized the symptoms or at least contacted the doctor when I first started feeling like crap.

"misery loves company."

influenza can allow colonized bacteria to grow. then boom! you have a bacteria flare up.

so absolutely influenza can land someone in the hospital, especially with CF.

30,000 people die of influenze in the US every year...
