Here's what I gleaned from the article. Seems like good news to me, though not outrageously good--like PA obliteration.
---Aeroquin was comparable or superior (aka not inferior) to inhaled tobramycin in terms of FEV1 at the end of each of three study periods (total of 168 days).
---Aeroquin patients ended with better lung function and lower PA in sputum when compared to the placebo patients, but Aeroquin did not lessen the time to first exacerbation.
---Aeroquin, inhaled tobramycin and placebo had similar tolerability and safety, though Aeroquin had increased metallic mouth-taste.
This is very good news! I can NOT AT ALL tolerate oral Levaquin,or any fluoroquinolones for that matter.
Levaquin is a very scary drug for me, makes me a nervous wreck, joint pain/cracking, terrible insomnia, don't feel my normal self-all the horrible symptoms of toxicity. It would be wonderful to inhale it ,- metallic taste is the least of my worries !
I'm like SoyaSauce, I have considered just getting worse in order to avoid Levaquin. I too find myself in extreme discomfort when on Levaquin, this use not to be an issue but I understand the toxicity levels are reached after awhile taking it. It also takes me time to recover from it, up to 3 months.
Any substitute to Levaquin is a good thing in my eyes!
I did the study for this drug and i have got to say...nope, nuh uh, no way. It tastes awful, i told my research nurse if they start giving that I GIVE UP lol. We still joke about it cause she's heard the same thing from others. I just remember 2 seconds into, i would gag.
