My family has major ear issues. My boys have had chronic ear infections all of their lives, and had several sets of ear tubes put in when they were young. I guess it could be CF related, but I have problems with it too, and I relate it to my severe allergies.
If you have a lot of ear wax, it is okay to remove some of it, but the purpose of ear wax is to protect your inner ear, so be careful to not remove too much. Also, if you have fluid build up behind your ear drum, DO NOT PUT OTC DROPS IN THERE!!! I cannot stress that enough. My hubby didn't listen to me about this, and his ear drum burst last week because of it. Very painful!!!
We do use ear candles to remove excess wax, but we only do one, then we wait a couple of days, and if the "popping" or "ringing" doesn't go away, we do another one. I don't know what kind of OTC removal kit you bought, but if it's one that shoots water or fluid into your ear, and you already have fluid build up in there, you can cause more damage, so be careful with that. You probably should go have it checked out, because having an ear drum burst is awful, and it can cause permanent hearing loss.
I hope you get it figured out - ear problems stink!
