Input on My Current Problems Needed

I finally got Percocet & took it for the first time last night for my chest pain. I waited until bedtime & started with one because I thought it would make me loopier then I normally am.

Well all it did was make me extremely sleepy without really easing the pain. I was exhausted from not sleeping well for a few nights so maybe that added to it. 4 hours later I took another one & that seemed to help more so evidentlally I need 2 instead of 1 when I do use them.

It did not take it completely away. It took the edge off as Tylenol does, but making me sleepy I guess is a benefit *shrugs*

So this morning I wake up feeling half way descent, but notice something. Now this may have been there, but I didnt notice it because I was distracted by the pain.

When I put my hands on my rib cage, right next to my boobs with one hand on each side. I notice that on my left side which is the problem side that it "seems" there is a rib that is "raised" above the rest.

If I put my finger on that & follow it, it goes down the original area that was the most painful during all of this. Although its not exceptionally painful now, but just tender. I still have an "ache" in my overall lung tho which could be from not being able to tolerate my vest for 2 treatments & being unable to breath deep enough to cough junk up.

IF this was there during my chest xray, shouldnt it have been visible? If not I am hoping the cat scan shows it. Next thing is that does this "raised" rib mean inflammation from a cracked rib or a possible dislocation?

A few of you have had experiences with rib issues so I am highly interested in feedback.

I havent tried my vest yet this morning, but I am going to because I need to at least try.

Thanks in advance!

Mel,

It sounds like you have a rib out of place, very badly. This can happen very easily/commonly from coughing. I have had it ebfore as have some friends who 'only' have had bronchitis or pneumonia or asthma issues.

I think often times we look for the 'big' things, especially the medical side things and we overlook these smaller items which can have a big impact on our health (not being able to cough productively) etc.

I would highly recommend going to see a chiropractor and masseus, a good one can be hard to find but they will know immediately what to do. Generally if a rib is put back into place it should 'take' right away now it will still be sore but it will be in place allowing muscles to go back to where they should be and the pain and inflammation will subside. Now sometimes there will be alot interference pain inflamation etc or muscles will be pulling the rib back out (especially if it has been this way for some time) so it may take more than once. It is not painful to have it put back in my experience but mine has never been as bad as you describe.

if you have any other questions or I didnt explain well let me know. I so wish you were closer my chiro masses could have you fixed up in one session each and you woudl feel like a new woman.

Thanks Nicole......I thought about contacting my chiropractor who I trust greatly to at least get his opinion.

Odd thing tho is I have not been coughing a lot. When I am on iv's my cough decreases almost immediately, but I will say that I have to "strain" to get things up so maybe that did it.

Either way it wont hurt to call him for an adjustment. With everything my body has been through I sure I could use "something"!

Do you suppose it is costochondritis with swelling (which actually has a different name) see this <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.medicinenet.com/costochondritis_and_tietze_syndrome/article.htm">http://www.medicinenet.com/cos...e_syndrome/article.htm</a> ?

Rip would get costochondritis frequently (the coughing on top of the Marfan Syndrom) and found it very painful. As I recall ice and a lidacaine patch over the area helped more than oral pain meds.

I would think if it doesn't show up on xray or catscan then it is more likely to be something like costochrondritis. (Have them check real carefully for hairline fractures of the rib, though, they used to miss Rip's frequently.)

Good luck with this....
