I definately feel your pain here. I could write a novel on the subject. And I don't deny being very cynical and bitter on the issue. The healthcare system in this country is horrid, as far as finances go. My husband and I have seriously considered divorcing several times in order to get medicaid for my girls. We haven't yet done it, but it's always in the back of our minds. And I'm sure that at some point we will have to. Right now the girls are healthy, and it still costs us about $400.00 a month for prescription copays alone. The doctor wants them on Hypertonic Saline but I can't afford it. I struggle buying vitamins and things like that. Let alone the food to feed them everything the doctor wants them to eat. It's very hard.

I'd better stop, cuz I could go on for hours on the subject... just wanted to say I feel your pain.

Oh yes. And many people in California who are on state Medicaid aren't even in this country legally. It's one thing to support citizens. It's another to support 10% of a 3rd world country's poor. And I'm out every day busting my ass at my job. It's not OK.

I think it also is sick how this country (U.S.) is supposed to be one of the wealthest countries in the world and yet it can't even take proper care of its citizens. And yes, you are punished for trying and busting your A**.

Perfect example, my neighbors are U.S. Citizens, drug addicts, and one is a prositute. Also, they are mother and son. She even has other children in foster care because of neglect and abuse. They have full Medicaid benefits. And trust me, I had no idea what I was getting into moving into my house!!!!! The U.S., in my opinion, supports those kind of people with insurance. The country would rather support addicts than encourage personal growth. That's the message the U.S. sends out everyday to its citizens. Great isn't it!!!!

I was a Certified Medical Assistant for about 3 years and worked in the Oncology Clinic in the Reading Hospital. I busted my butt and literally ended up in the ER every weekend for about 2 months. Finally, I got MRSA. That ended my career. The whole clinic, which had on-site chemo and radiation, was exposed. All my patients. In the end, my Associates Degree was worthless. I'm still paying on a school loan that is useless. The hospital had to file a JACO report, and I got immediate Social Security. No need to even file an appeal.

However, since I am married with CF, I don't qualify for any state assistance. All the state looks at is your mortgage payment, utility bills, and car payment. The heck with the cost of your meds!!! Even Medicare is a joke when it comes to coverage of anything. It's only good if you are a relatively healthy 70-year-old. I have my husband's coverage so I still have a lot of out-of-pocket expenses.

BOTTTOM LINE: It's all BS.

When I stopped working, I wasnt eligible for the assistance for WIC etc. We made $50. too much. Imagine how much over I would have been still working....ANYWAY~~ The Supervisor in my Office at work that handled Medicaid applications actually told me at least seperate from my husband. I would be guaranteed benefits of all sorts then. She meant well because I was really close to her, but the idea just tore me up right into the pit of my stomach. I am suppose to throw my marriage & my "family" away because I need some help. F---k that......we suffered thru. We made it without the assistance. BUT mine was an acute situation. We were talking a short term financial difficulty. Either way tho I think its a shame that it needs to come to that. Good Luck!

You might want to go back over it with the insurance company to make sure you know what they mean by "paying half". It might be that they pay half of a negotiated rate, which could be considerably less than the billing rate. I've seen this in plenty of insurance policies. I've also seen, however, some policies that require the policy holder to pay half the negotiated rate PLUS any difference between negotiated and billed - which then becomes a separate discussion with the provider; i.e. some providers will waive the difference if you press them on it.

Jennifer,

Do you know any attorneys who might be willing to write a letter to your insurance company indicating that if you do not get home ivs, you will most likely end up in the hospital and that would cost them a heck of a lot more in the long run?

We did this with DS's synagis shots. Insurance wouldn't cover them. A relative who is an attorney wrote a letter indicating costs, plus emotional stress... Within an hour we were approved. Worth a try! L
