Insurance Stinks...

Okay, not to sound cynical.. at all... this is more like a vent.. But as a nurse, I see so many ppl who are on medicaid that come to the emergency room for care.. ( as well they should, that is what we are here for) but they don't have to pay any co pays, they get all their meds for free.. and some of them have the attitude that they are "owed" this service.. Period..and literaly I had a patient almost spit on me today because I didn't fill his presciption at the hospital and I was making him go get his meds at the pharmacy...(Not that we have the means to fill them at the hospital because we don't and not that he had to pay for the presciption this guy was just mad at the fact that he had to make a stop on his way home.. How rude of me to inconvience this guy.. really ha)

So fast forward to me, My insurance, because I work, (and I am grateful for my job) is through the roof.. Well now I am sick... I need IV's.. and really the best thing for me is to get a PICC line in and start right away..

I don't need to go in the hospital.. I need IVS to knock out my gunk... So I decide to take on my insurance company today..I call and tell them that I am predicting IVs are in my near future and I want to know what has to be signed for them to pay for my at home infusion...

The response I got was. They will pay half of my therapy.... well wonderful, thankou very much.. Anyone have any idea how much Zyvox cost per stinking bag??? Welll over a thousand dollars... and I would need it twice a day... Not to mention flushes, and heparin.. not to mention Ceftaz which is also through the roof expensive

I ask to speak to a manager, surley some one has to have common sense.. would they rather me go inpatient in the hospital and pay the whole thing???? I try to reason with the women.. Nothing.. I can go do outpatient clinic and get transfused or I can go in the hospital!!!

Those are my options.. Gee arn't I glad I killed myself to go to school to be a nurse.so that I can have crap health insurance.... I am so pissed.... IF I didn't work.. if I got medicaid, I could sit at home and have home infusions and pay nothing for them.....

Sometimes this insurance thing is really screwed up.. and for one second I am sorry that I don't play the system like a lot of my patients do..

Gee I don't mean to sound cynical, and I am not even bitter.. I just think it stinks.

It does stink. And for people who have Medicaid, they shouldn't be complaining. My neighbor, who is 40 years old, still lives at home, can't read or write English, and chooses not to work, recieves SSI and Medicaid. I, on the otherhand, had to fight tooth and nail for it. People who don't deserve it shouldn't have it, period. And for those of us who actually try to have a decent job, we should get some sort of benefits! I can't believe nurses get such crap insurance! You're in the healthcare field, for god's sake! Our insurance policies suck in this country...

That is the thing that makes me so mad.. I qualify for disability based on two different diseases that I have.. I know ppl that have Addison's disease that collect disability just for that alone, (not that I think they should but that is a different story...I also "qualify" for disabilty from the CF end based on the amount of times it requires me to be on IV antibiotics a year etc..... but because I chose to work, (even sometimes on IVS, and because I chose to do all I can do).. I have to pay for stuff on my own...I don't even buy my vitamins because the are so much money..

IN Jennifers world I would do the same for each person regardless if they work or not.. For instance if someone has CF and they are on X amount of meds, they should get a supplmental income, or a tax break or something.. that equals what other ppl with the same diseases or level of sickness have..

I feel like I am being punished for trying...

I have a ???....Is the half that they pay for the actual meds or the supplies & the nursing care? I ask because my meds are seperate from the home infusion care. My meds are the same co pay I would pay the pharmacy. I did find out that the co pay for each med is the same amount if I get 3 days worth or 3 weeks worth so we (doctor/I) learned to get the most for the $$. Anyway I was just curious....

Ha Amy.. I don't know what happend to me...Brain shift maybe... I still feel like everyone has the right to good care or they should anyway.. but I just don't think ppl who work should be punished for working....

We usually agree on most things but I do remember the conversation slightly I will have to search for it to see what I said...
