Insurance

I have been spending a lot of time lately thinking/worrying about insurance. Patrick and I can not get married until we have a plan. He is currently covered by both his parents' insurance, but the moment he gets married he loses that coverage . I finish school in December, and I am hoping and praying to find a job with the federal government; they have great benefits and no pre-existing illness clause. But... I am worried that I won't find a job with them, and I do not want to wait much longer to get married!

So my question is really directed at those of you who have CF and are married an those of you who married a CFer: what did you do about insurance?

Ruth, I'm not married to a CFer nor am I married, but I do have CF.

Part of being involved in a CFer's life is learning to be practical. I think you guys need to hold off on getting married until you have a job, if insurance is your biggest concern. LIke you said, you don't want to wait much longer but you need to keep the facts in mind.

Does he work? Can he get a job where he has insurance through work? This is the only other way to ensure that he has insurance if you guys get married and you don't have a job.

Take care.

Edited to Add : Group insurance through the federal government or a normal corporation/small business never has a pre-existing clause. It's a federal rule that group insurance has to accept everybody. It's only individual insurance (the kind that you pick up on your own) that can exclude people for pre-existing conditions.

I believe ther pre existing condition clause is mostly for those who don't already have insurance or who have a gap in their coverage.
I would check with Beth Suffian (sp?). she is a lawyer who handles CF issues. I believe there is a link on the CFF website.
I have heard her speak in person and was very impressed. I'm sure she can provide some very valuable information.

(at which point you'll come back here and share it, right?)

Sakasuka- You are right, and there is no way either of us would consent to marrying before the insurance is worked out. That's why I am curious as to what things people around here have done. The easiest thing is for me to get a job that will provide the coverage we need, but if that takes a long time or proves to be impossible, I know there are other options. That is what I am trying to find out from you good people. He does work, at a job he loves but that can't provide insurance to its employees (yet. It's a small, privately owned business), and I don't want him to stop doing what he loves for me. So no, that is not really an option.

jandburke- thanks for the tip; I will have a look and see what I can find. (And I would be happy to share it here after the fact )
