Intense Stomach Pain

Has anyone had this happen?

You get the feeling that you're hungry but the feeling escalates quickly and then it feels like your stomach is eating itself.
You're doubled over in pain. The pain in so intense that you have trouble breathing.
You grab anything you can to eat (I usually grab a slices of bread) and start eating as fast as you can.
The food hits your stomach and you start to feel normal again
------OR----------------
your stomach freaks out and you start dry heaving and begin vomiting. you vomit until there is nothing left but bile. then you start to feel normal again.

This only happens once in a great while (thank god) and usually in the middle of the night or early morning. Once it happened during the day (it was not pretty).

Anyone else have these episodes? Know what the heck it is?
Freaks me out.

I used to get the stomach cramping, dry heaving and vomitting when I was having gallstone/gallbladder attacks.

They started out like anxiety attacks at first - where I would get what felt like gas pain and it would radiate into my chest and rib cage. I would start to have difficulty breathing and could only catch my breath if I was hunched over panting.

The started escalating after several months of attacks like mentioned above. Then they progressed to include the dry heaving. They lasted for hours at times.

Then as time passed further I began vomitting at the end of the attacks. After the first time vomitting I realized it gave immediate relief to my pain and I began inducing vomitting at the beginning of the attacks if at all possible (not a bulimia thing - I only induced vomitting WHEN I started with an attack because they lasted SO incredibly long).

At first the happened in the day but by the time I was throwing up I was waking up in the middle of the night with severe stomach pain and cramping. I also started getting itching in my feet for NO reason at all. It happened a handful of times, but it is actually a symptom of gallstones I think it is.

I will say I NEVER was hungry during these episodes - and even if I was I was unable to eat so food would not help me. My stomach would cramp so severely that I couldn't even stand or sit up straight let alone eat. I had blood work that showed elevated liver enzymes and that led me to investigate further what was wrong with me - up until the abnormal blood work all of my docs had told me I was having anxiety attacks. I pushed for testing and ended up having to have my gallbladder removed roughly 3 years ago (it was FULL of stones).

I will add that they only time I really get extreme hunger where it feels like my stomach is eating my insides is when my blood sugar is extremely low. I can get mild stomach cramps but I usually do NOT have the other symptoms that you described. Though I will add when I have the low blood sugar hunger eating something does rectify the situation rather quickly.

Take Care,
Lindsey

being that you are having these attacks in the middle of the night I would maybe talk to your doc about getting your gallbladder checked out. It may not be the problem but it would not hurt to check it out - especially if you do not have blood sugar issues.

Take Care.

Heyyyy....

This is so strange that you posted this today. I just recently started taking prilosec for acid and BM issues and I notice that I have been having a lot more stomach cramps. Before the prilosec, my BM's were very loose and getting more frequent and then I upped my enzyme dose and it would help for maybe two weeks then get bad again. The prilosec has helped me to have more formed and less frequent BM's but when I have to go, the pain is sooooooo intense that I am practically in tears. I thought it was getting better but this AM I woke up and was doing my morning routine and it was hurting soooooo bad that I wanted to cry. Then I went and passed the BM and I was a lil better but not so much.

I dont really know if mine is that much of a problem, but I get these pains almost every time I have to go. Usually I feel better after I go. I just attribute the pains to having to go to the bathroom, like the bm is moving around my system. I have never had it checked...but today I also got a really bad anxiety type attack like you are describing...which I think was related to my blood sugar. I am sorry abot your pains, but you are not alone. Sorry if this hasnt helped much, but I hope you do get some answers and maybe we should both get checked out <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
