Iron questions

Just a quick question about iron. The RDA for iron seems to be around 10-18 milligrams depending on a number of factors. Last april (I think) I was getting iron infusions of 150mg 10x over a two week period. This time when I got out of the hospital they prescribed a dose that doen't seems safe. They have me on 600mg (<i>300 2x day</i>) and the RX is refillable twice.....thats a lot of iron in the long run.
Last night the side effects were too much. It started making my breathing worse, much like asthma would, coughing, ect, so 've stopped taking it. I can't take suppliments like zinc, any vitamin with copper in it or certain other minerals because they always mess with my breathing. <i>600mg of iron a day seems a little excessive to me, what do you think</i>?
Anyone who knows more about minerals and safe amounts let me know what you think.

My advice to you Jade is to talk to your doctor again and tell him or her how your feeling about the excessive amount and see if he can't make you feel better about it. How did they decide on the amount?, is a good starter question. Iron is nothing to mess around with. I also want to mention that if you have an asthma factor involved nerves or anxiety may be your reason for suppliments bothering your breathing. I don't know the extent of it. So I would just reccomend you talk to your doctor before making any quick decisions. Also look up Iron online and see if you can't get reccomended amounts for your age and weight. Then when you talk to your doctor you'll be equipped. Im on a very high dose of Vit k but for good reason. But I drove everyone crazy because I kept enquiring about possible problems, and how much is too much. I finally got an answer I was satisfied with.

Listen to your gut and ask questions.
