I am now allergic to ALL classes! Which means anytime I need IVs I have to go into the ICU to be desensitized to them. sooo that pretty much means no more home IVs but hospitalization for a month. has anyone else ever gone thru desensitization? what is it like?

It's not too bad really. I just had to get desensitized on my last hospitalization. ICU nurses are usually the best (and nicest) and as long as you can stay sane for a day or two in there, you're fine. Basically you are bed-bound which is the only problem. There was a little miniature toilet in my room, but I wasn't allowed to walk beyond that since they have you hooked up to heart monitors, bp cuff, pulse-ox etc. Take a good book or a laptop and it should pass quickly. (my room also had a TV) Once they start the desensitization they give you slightly larger doses every 15 minutes for about 8 hours, then they wait a while after that to make sure you're fine. Then they ship you back up to a normal room.

I'm sorry to hear no more home IVs for you, that really sucks. Good luck with everything.

I have to get desensitized every time I go on IV's. My allergy doc is now comfortable doing it on the regular floor b/c I've only had some mild wheezing and itching as a reaction. I am allergic to all antibiotics except for aminoglycocides, but they won't give me those anymore b/c I only have 30% hearing left in my right ear (none in my left). I have a great allergist.. I think that's the key to a smooth desensitization... yeah it does suck that you have to go in the hospital for all IV's (I can do gancyclovir.. anti-viral at home). I find myself putting off IV's a lot longer b/c of it. By the way, I've had a tx, but still have to get frequent IV antibiotics for my sinuses.
I think if you go through several desensitizations symptom free, then they will be a little less strict about it, and you won't have to go in the ICU every time. Good Luck!
