when i have the dressing changed i tell them to fan some air to help in the drying process, so it can be done quicker. they normally take like the tergderm piece and use that as the fan and then put it on. the longer they wait the worse it is for me. i had my dressing changed today. and after she was done she was sorting out what viel she needed for what blood i excused myself so that i could get a cold wash cloth i was so hot and sweaty. i also keep a drink by my side so that i can have something cold and i guess sugary so that i don't fall out. glad to see i'm not the only one!! i can't believe the nurses make fun of you caitlin! that's so mean and wrong!

They do it all in fun. The IV nurses that I was talking about were wonderful dont get me wrong, but it was more them that were mean. At least the others, that I have known forever, I know they are just kidding around.

Wow, that sucks. I'm on the total opposite end of the spectrum. I have a mediport that I access and do dressing changes on myself. Whenever I used to get a PICC I would do the dressing change on those myself too. It's kind of awkward working with one hand, but not impossible. If I went into clinic with a newly changed dressing the nurses would always comment how neat and clean it looked, then it was nice to see their face when I told them I did it, haha.

I did have one episode, a long time ago, before they used the little clamp things or stitches. My PICC had pulled out of my arm like 3" and I didn't notice til I looked down and saw this part outside my arm that definitely was not supposed to be outside, and I flipped out. I guess even 'tough' people have their moments.

I have gotten wimpier the older I get too, and have thought the same thing- this should be getting easier to do, not worse-bah! - but now I know I'm not alone!
