IV Big Improvements

I must be really really behind on things. When I have had home iv's I never had the balls. The first time I had a huge syringe for one med that I pushed to administer and the others were gravitity fed. That didnt work well so I smartened up for next time and asked for an infusion pump like what I had in the hospital. Ever since then I have had the infusion pumps so it would beep when done & the meds went smoothly & quicker. I do, however, remain stuck in the house since I have the iv pole & pump to use. The balls shown seem to allow much more freedom! If nothing else I could go downstairs and get a load of laundry or go on the PC to do bills etc. I feel like I am still in the stone age.....LOL! Thanks for the pics Em. I have something to work with now!

oh yes Mel, at leas ttry it once, this is so great IMO!

The 'ball' is preset to do about an hour so it has been almost an hour and I unscrewed it to see if it was taking right amount of time and it is down to a very slow drip so I put it back on and will just go by leaving it hooked up for 1 hour. The big syringe I use is 35cc filled to 20cc for the ceftaz and I push in 2ml a min for 10 min no biggie at all if I am in a hurry they said it can be done over 5 minutes but sometims that makes me a bit too naseus. I HATE being hooked to a pole, it is a big mental thing for me, so inconvenient and it makes me feel, well 'sick' I guess. Even in hospital the minute my infusion is done I want heplocked.

I cant seem to find you a good picture of the elastomeric pump I have on teh web. Maybe if I can remmebr I will take a pic and post it unless osmeone finds a good pic of one for ya. I did find alot of info on web if you want to read that by googling it.

I wonder if I should post in families, it seems this would be so much easier for the parents and the kids who dont want ot sit still!

Does anyone know if only certain meds come in these & if there is a reason why insurance wouldnt pay for this method? I have great insurance and am just wondering why I havent had it before. Maybe because I didnt know any different.

Garran usually gets the premixed balls of antibiotic when he is getting the tobramiacin and the cephapine, but this time he is getting the Timentin and Bactrim and the Timentin can be put in the ball but the Bactrim has to be mixed with in two hours of use so we have to mix it and use a pump at home so we cant get the ball for that one.

So in answer to your question Mel, there are some Meds that you cant get on the ball, but not sure of the whole list, you will have to talk to your Doc and the pharmacist aboout that one.

But all in all if we had a choice the ball is much easier and faster and we would prefer that to the pump any day.
