IV Vanco/ IV Zyvox....

My 5 year old is on IV Vanco to treat MRSA and despite slowing down his infusion to 3 hours, he has developed a bad allergic reaction. His whole body turns bright red, itchy and a fever. We have to stop the IV Vanco and now tomorrow he is staring IV Zyvox. He has had Zyvox twice before orally and has tolerated it fine. Does anyone have experience with it IV? Has anyone ever been de-sensitized to IV Vanco?? Our CF doctor has talked about that as well. Aidan has horrific sinuses and usually needs IVs to clear them. Thanks very much.

Megan, mom to Aidan 5 with CF and Gavin 2 no CF (IVF/PGD)

All I've ever personally done is zyvox iv, not vanco. The doctors I've talked to say that vanco is much worse in terms of side effects. The zyvox makes me nauseated, and takes 2 hours to run the dose I'm on, but other than that I've never had trouble with it.

I have been on IV Vanc for as long as I can remember (when I need IV meds, of course). From the first time I was given it I had an alergic reaction commonly referred to as red-man's syndrome. I was prescribed and instructed to pre-medicate with IV benedryl, which makes me extremely tired, but the treatment tolerable. The treatment usually last anywhere between two and three hours. There is an oral alternative to the Vanc, but I can't remember what it's called. I do know that it is pretty expensive. I'll talk with my CF nurse and see what it's called, it might be the other medication that ya'll are talking about.

Feel free to email me or message me.
