IV's

I culture staph and Psuedo. I am normally prescribed Tobra and Fortaz for the Psuedo - but this round of IVs they skipped the IV tobra and just put me on inhaled TOBI - as there was very little Psuedo on my cultures.

I am being treated with Cefepime and Zyvox for the staph - Cefepime IV every 12 hours and Zyvox oral two times a day. I was on the zyvox IV when I was at the hospital - but when I came home they switched it to oral.

Normally I am on IV's for three weeks, three antibiotics Meropenom and Ceftazidime are continuous and Amikacin is once a day. Since this flare-up I have been on IV's for 8 out of the last 9 weeks!!!!!! If this doesn't work they are looking at more drug combo's like 4-5 different antibiotics. I have Psuedo and B. Cepacia.

All I have to say is to all those who are not on continuous IV's be very, very grateful!!!!!!

I have only had to go on IV's once, and it was for 3 weeks. I felt better within 48 hrs. but I was also on Prednisone which always helps.

I can't imagine continous IV's at home. Currently Cory is on an every 6 hour, every hour and every 12 hours and it almost feels continous. It has only been 4 days and he is already irratated.
Cory is usally on IV's for 2-3 weeks. 6 weeks was his longest that was back when B. Cepacia first started to show up.

I do 3 weeks of IVs every 3 months.  I'm not sure when I start
to feel better, but I know after one week I'm usually feeling back
to 100%.  Almost always week 2 I'm feeling fine, and the
third week I'm really ready to be done.

I used to do 12 days every three months, ceftazidim and tobramycin.
When I was younger I'd have a Venflon, these days I just
butterflies twice a day instead, along with intermate. Since moving
to Australia almost four years ago (from Norway) I've just been
using Ciproxin and Tobi once or twice a year. I also use Azitromax
on a daily basis all year to keep all the pesky little infections
at bay. I try to have two weeks of IVs whenever I go to Norway.<br>

I've been doing IVs every three months probably the last 12 years
or so, and it ensures that I never get really sick, although I tend
to get a bit worse when it's getting close to three months since
the last treatment. It usually takes me 4-7 days to feel better
once the treatment starts.
