Hey Terri (and everyone)
Thanks for asking! We finally seem to be turning a corner (knock on wood!) The last time I posted (I think) we thought things were getting better, but it turns out they had to get worse first...Emily remained really bloated from the IV fluid for nearly two weeks. We now know that she should never be given the typical IV saline mix. Her body does not metabolize it. She will always need a higher potassium content. Who knew? She still cultured c. diff after 10 days of Vaynco, so she is now on a 20 day course of Flagyl. For two weeks it was like our smart, funny 14 month old had reverted to a 7 month old. She was barely awake, didnd't crawl, walk, sit or even roll over. She moaned in pain/discomfort most of the time. It was frightening. Somehow, in the middle of all this she mamaged to get an ear infection and cut 4 teeth, too. So, she is now on Bactrim for the ear infection, too. She used to do really well with the oral meds, but now refuses eveything. Every 2-4 hours all day long, its a battle to get SOMETHING into her!!! But, she is eating like a horse! We are on a very high protein/salt diet to get her metabolism working again and rid the excess fluid. Things are getting back to normal. She was finally up and walking this weekend and the naughty streak is returning. She now not only climbs out of the high chair...tonight she tried to climb in. She seems to be craving the foods they want us to feed her, so meals are not the battle they used to be...We thank God for that small favor!
Anyway, long story short, we are getting back to normal. Thanks again to everyone who sent us well wishes. The whole experience was an eye opener and a huge dose of reality for me. It has left me a little shaken and more than a little fearful of what lies ahead. And again, I have a renewed respect for all of our friends here who have dealt with the really "big stuff." It's been said alot lately, but this site really is my inspiration and its what keeps me going when things start to get hard.
thanks everyone!
