Kids with Osteoporosis?

Buckeye

I know that adults with CF are more prone to Osteoporosis, but is it true for kids also? Has anyone's kids been tested for it or treated for it? And does it have anything to do with being PI or PS?The reason I'm asking is that we found out this week that my son has a stress fracture above his knee (<b>very</b> long story, but he's actually had the fracture for three weeks). Now this is the same leg he had bone surgery on in June, but it was not anywhere near the surgery site. He also has Cerebral Palsy which can make him more prone to Osteoporosis so not sure which diagnosis to blame it on. Nothing major occurred that I can think of to cause the fracture. The Ortho wants to do a bone density test in a few weeks.

Pam not sure if this is any help but my daughter has low bone density. They did a scan about 3 years ago. We dicided against treating it incase she wanted to have kids because of the med used to treat it could have an affect on the fetus since the fetus pulls from a mothers bones it will cause birth defects. Lucky for her no broken bones. She odes'nt do sports so I think that helps her. Because if she gets a break they will treat. The bone scan is easy not much to it. They do it on the left hip. Just like using the left hand for growth plates and bone age. She does take vitamin D 1200 IU aday.

Jordan was dx with Sherman's Kyphosis just before he was dx with CF. The spine disorder is what led to a CF dx, beacuse we were sent to a pulmo as a pre-surgery screening. (because we knew Jordan had asthma)

I was told at the time, that the two were not related. After starting my search for information on CF, I did find studies that linked poor bone health to malabsorption issues. I even read that children with CF should have regular bone scans because of this. Now Jordan is considered PS, however, he does have some degree of difficulty gaining and maintaining weight. He can lose it very quickly, but can't gain it quickly. I will always wonder if the CF had something to do with the spine disorder.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how the bone density scan goes. When we found out about his leg being broken I mentioned to the Orthopedic Surgeon who discovered it that maybe it had something to do with the CF and he looked at me like I had two heads. He has told me in the past that my son is the only CF kid he sees, so maybe it's not all that common in the kids.
