Lean Body Mass Loss

I am doing ok so far with the CFRD. I have not eatting any suger for a week now. and so far my blood sugers has been ok. But I am still having issues with lows. I went out and got some suger tablets for when I am out and they go to low. I also got some info on a pump that I may ask my doc about when it becomes time for that. Other then that I am having issues keeping lean body mass in my arms and legs. I just keep losing it.. Even with tube-feeds. I am also getting a bit thiner.

And over the last week I have been getting black and blue marks on my arms and legs! I am worred about it becuase I also have low immune system i hope there is not somthing worng with my blood cells. I am going to ask for a CBC on Friday when I go to CF clinic.

Thanks everyone for being here for me!

Oh goodness Sarah, if I understand what you are saying correctly, it is no wonder you are losing muscle! EVERY body HAS to have carbs and sugar. Us with diabetes needs extra insulin to absorb the carbs and sugar. This is what our body uses for energy. If we starve (literally) our bodies of glucose our bodies will eat away at the muscle trying to use it for energy. This is a baaad thing.

Like CaliSally suggested, I use two types of insulin. One is long lasting, Lantus, to keep my baseline blood sugar down. My baseline is normally higher and gets even higher when I am sick or if I am on steroids. And then I also carb count and use a ratio of short lasting insulin, Humalog or Novolog, to help my body absorb the sugars/carbs/glucose to use as energy.

Unfortunately insulin shots are usually what is recommended over pills for numerous reasons. BTW.

Do you see a endocrinologist who is knowledgeable with CFRD? Are you on shots already? Pumps are super sweet if your insurance will cover them, but in the mean time if you aren't on shots, you may want to ask why your doc hasn't put you on them.

Please PM me if you have any questions at all (or post here so others can learn from us). I am no expert, but I have done a LOT of researching and also see an endo who is VERY knowledgeable in CFRD. I love to pass on what I learn from her! CFRD is really overwhelming for some (including me) and I love to help others out with their frustrations.

nope I am not on any shots yet.. I have seen what diabeties can do becuase my dad had a very bad case of type 1. and I just can't even ask for help. I con't even pick up the phone and call my doctor and tell them about my blood sugers. I know they will be nice about it but I just don't and can't take shots. I am to scard!

CFRD is different than Type 1. So don't be too scared. It will be okay, especially if you get treatment for your CFRD. I really hate to toot my own horn, but I have blogged a lot about CFRD, so check it out (link below). Also there are a lot of other knowledgeable people on the board who are very willing to support you.

Before getting a pump, your insurance company may require you to use shots for a while. That is ok, I think it is easier to find the right insulin amounts using shots anyway (took me a long hard time to believe that though!)

Have you ever read the booklet that the CF Foundation puts out? Here's a link: http://www.cff.org/treatments/...s/Nutrition/Diabetes/
On that page there is a place to download a booklet. It may be a little overwhelming, so take it chapter by chapter. Ask us if you have any questions.

You are not alone in this.
