Levaquin

Hey guys, i am the original poster
so basically i also had restlessness with the levaquin, so i decided to take it in the morning instead of at night. so far today, am ok, the restlessness is actually good because i feel wide awake. the itchy patch is still there- it is SO weird because it is not really that red anymore, it just simply itches.

about the cipro/levaquin thing--- i take cipro alot for flare ups that i dont want to get IV's for...i get IV cleanouts a lot for my cepacia. The thing is, levaquin (and the late tequin) were on my synergys for cepacia and NOT cipro. so, even though they are all quinolones, they arent all the same med. it is too bad tequin is off the market, because i tolerated it well.

anyway, reading all of these bad things about levaquin has a me a little freaked out, but i have to remember that people say the same things about cipro, which i love. i do feel stiffer when i use the cipro (and feel that way with the levaquin) but it is not terrible.

as far as the misuse of levaquin, i can totally see that point of view, but my concern is cepacia, not pseudamonas, which i have had since i was 4 (and now 23) and i need drugs that work, even if i have to suffer some side effects.

the only thing that freaks me out is reading on other sites that people have developed skin rashed days or weeks into thier use of levaquin....not necessarily right away....

i have a high school reunion to go to in three weeks and certainly dont need a scary face rash

you DISGUST me.

who wants to guess where there are so few antibiotics in development????

because people like this anon poster expect medications to have NO SIDE EFFECTS.

Cipro and Levo kill some of the more virulent bacteria on the planet. And you expect them to have no side effects?????????

Mark my words when in 10 years, all of us are on the verge of death because there are no antibiotics that can treat our PA because we're all resistant to everything that's on the market. And nothing new has come to the market because pharma companies don't want to spend R&D money developing a drug that they'll get sued for.

It's because of MORONS like this poster and this lawyer who expect medications to have zero side effects.

I was on Levaquin years ago (about 5-6). I was taking it in conjunction with TOBI. One month on TOBI one month off and in the off months I was taking Levaquin. I had this routine for about 7-8 months without a problem (except minor sun sensitivity).

Then developed an allergy out of nowhere. Started having severe joint pain in my ankles, knees and hips. From there I got these little red blisters on my joints (truly just at the joints - starting with my knees - then ankles, then hips) those blisters ultimately turned into a rash which turned out to be leukocytoclastic vasculitis. For those that choose to look that up or are intrigued I will prepare you it is one of the nastiest looking things I had ever seen - DISCLAIMER: the pics I have seen do not need to be viewed while eating. Anyway - that developed because they would not take me off the med - they didn't think I had an allergy because I had been taking it for almost a year. I had those symptoms off and on for about 3-4 months (they worsened when I was on the levaquin and went away when I was on TOBI). They finally admitted me to the hospital for tests because I demanded it when I started getting the blisters on my elbows and joint pain in my arms. Once the took me off levaquin permanently and I was able to get all the med out of my system the rash went away and hasn't come back.

I am not telling you this to freak you out - just to let you know my experience - though it is rare and unlikely (my docs told me I was their medical mystery lol). It is amazing the bizarre things that meds can cause. I hope that what you are experiencing clears itself up and the itchy skin thing goes away.

I also had ankle and wrist pain when I was on Levequin and each time I used it the pain started earlier in the treatment and was more intense. It would take months to feel back to normal again. But I have a question for the poster that said they take Bactrim instead- is Bactrim a drug used for pseudo?

LOL Folks.
FYI I won't be suing.
He's dead now - from sepsis.
Either because there wasn't a drug strong enough to stop the sepsis
or
Because the drugs they had him on were so strong that they caused aplastic anemia which made sepsis inevitable.

Either way. He never would have had the years he had without all of the strong drugs he took.

Sometimes tho' - you just can't win for trying....

I was on Levaquin (the first time for me) and TOBI in February. I actually liked it better than cipro which is what they usually give me. Only once a day and I didn't get a yeast infection or diareah.

Very interesting about the Levaquin Amy-I wouldn't doubt what you are saying, I have to pay $150 for 14 pills of Levaquin! My CF center in Seattle wouldn't put me on Cipro, they said I could either have hospital IV's (have never had them), tetracycline (which would fight one of my bugs), or pay for the Levaquin-can you believe that? So needless to say I switched centers because of what they told me. I'll have to talk with my new CF center about this and see what they have to say!

I LOVE levaquin. Hvae been on it many times and it has saved me many hospital trips! LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It works MUCH better than Cipro for me!

I was told and have read that Levaquin is effective against pseudo, 2nd to Cipro as far as the quionlones and Pseudo

No side effects except some mood issues. Cipro makes me unable to eat and makes me really sun sensitive

CF docs SHOULD be aware that Cipro works on PA much better than Levo. But some may not.

And Levo reps may be telling your doc some false info. If he believes everything a rep says and doesn't do his own research - shame on him. He shouldn't be your doc.

I'm a rep myself - but the best docs I call on- and the ones that I respect most - will challenge all of my information.

But what if I wasn't culturing PA? I have only cultured it twice (both times when I was pregnant) and haven't cultured it again since then (last time was 2 1/2 years ago). I have just cultured staff since then.

If you're not culturing PA, then you're one lucky SOB. Man that bug is my worst enemy.

If you're not culturing PA, then almost any antiobic works for Staph, including levo.

Yep-I thank my lucky stars that I have only cultured it twice. They say that is unusual, but I'll take what I can get. In the past, I have been on Keflex (the generic one) and that cures most of my lung infections. It didn't seem to work so they put me on Levaquin, and I have taken that about 3 times or so. I have been on Keflex for about 10 years, so I wasn't suprised when it stopped working as well. I have taken it a few times since I last took the Levaquin though, and it did work on those bugs.
So if I don't have PA, do you think it would make sense for them to put me on Levaquin and not Cipro? And save the Cipro for when I am culturing PA?
I guess I'll talk with my CF doctor at my next appt to see what he has to say. Thanks for the info!

Marci,

You're dead on. If you're not culturing PA, and your doc TRUELY doesn't think it's a fluke but you absolutely don't have it (cultures can be a very inexact science. you may just be coughing up phlem from the section of your lungs where PA isn't colonized.... so you could still have PA but just not colonize it), then no need for Cipro. Levo will do just fine.

But if there's a chacne you may have PA, Levo will make PA resistant to the class of quinolones quicker than Cipro will.

Congrats on not culturing PA. That is just fantastic I'll live vicariously through you.

Hello Folks

Did I read correctly...
Do some people stay on antiobics all the time
Because I only take them when I am sick.

Just asking

i was on levaquin for like a month for an oral antibiotic clean out-deal, and i don't think i had any side-effects (thank God) from the levaquin. my dr. told me to watch it because it can really upset your stomach, but i guess i have a strong stomach. the only problems i had during that specific clean out was feeeling realllly jittery... but we think that was from the prednisone.... but maybe not if you having that too? or anyone else?

hope this helps! i loved levaquin, and it seemed to help me, so i hope it helps you too!
