Life Insurance

My husband wanted me to ask whether there are places where CF-ers can get life insurance. He said that he saw some online, but didn't know anything about the companies. He can get $100k through his employer but he doesn't feel like that is enough.

Thanks!

no. not if you need a physical or questionnaire to qualify.
some kinds of insurance may not require that.
but I would question the life insurance thru work. We thought at first that would be Ok but at my workplace it won't pay for anything you have been treated for during the a "qualifying" year (or some such legalese you would know better than me). So you are only covered for death from a condition if you can go a year without hospitalization or major treatment for that condition.

Also, at my husband's workplace you could not continue your life insurance if you became disabled and left work (which was the most likely scenario and actually what happened).

All things be unequal. We decided our best option was to "self-insure" and not to pay for any insurance for him.

As I was pulling in the larger income, we did make sure that I had max insurance at work to ease his transition to public support if I died.

My sister was able, just two weeks ago, to get a small policy on my nephew with CF, but it is only $25,000 and doesn't cover a death due to illness for the first 2 years. And she had to get the policy bought before he turned 16, which is next month.

I was fortunate enough to have my agent suggest life insurance on my daughter when she was about 8 months old, just in case something were to happen, and she was dx w/CF 6 months later. I signed my second daughters policy prior to her birth, knowing there was a 25% chance she would have CF and my hubby called our agent the day she was born and he sent off her application (along with the policy fee as a 'birth day gift'). She was dx at three weeks old.

I always suggest to friends to get policies on their infants just in case now. I always thought it was morbid to get life insurance on a baby, but now I look at it differently. You just never know what can happen to make someone un-insurable.

Shortly after DS was born, we tried to get insurance thru our insurance guy -- NW Mutual, but couldn't because of his CF. We also applied on a whim to the Gerber insurance. I do know of people on other sites who have gotten it -- one was a farmers insurance out of Kansas, I think.

Just reminded me that we need to get on the ball and try to get DS signed up again. And I don't really think about it as being morbid -- heck DH had a small policy thru Thrivendt that his grandparents signed him up for and we cashed it in when we purchased our first house to use as downpayment.

I was able to pass the health questionaire required by my work to get the 'higher' levels of insurance ebcause they ased about smoking high blood pressure heart disease etc, they never asked about lung issues etc.

In addition my previous company was bought out and I was able to keep that policy at approximately same price I was paying.

I also was eligible and kept one through my alumni association from college and one small one through my credit union.
