MAI

I am 28 years old with CF and recently diagnosed with MAI (Mycobacterium Avium-Intracellulare). Have any of you ever heard of this? Most of the information I have found on it deals with people that are HIV positive, which I am not. I am trying to find out symptoms (if there are any, I have not had anything unusual yet) and how this will effect my health.

Thanks,
Ann

Ann, my kids had a mycobacterium but not the same one. The website and forum for Non-tubercular myco is very helpful. Here's the link:

There are others here who also have myco. I bet you'll hear from them too. Good luck.

Here's an article I wrote that's a succinct description of MAC (MAI)

Hi Ann, I have MAC, not the same mycobacterium that you have, but a relative. The reason you end up seeing so much written about the HIV patients is b/c (I believe) that population is larger then the CF population with MAC. They can easily get the myco b/c their immune systems are non existent which makes them susceptible to it as well as us.

It's great that you're not seeing any symptoms yet. I was first diagnosed with MAC about 10 years ago and only in the last 3 years has mine really started acting up. MAC is a slow growing bug which is why it took so long for me to see symptoms. I'm not sure about the MAI -since there are several different types of mycobacteriums. I'm only up on the m. avium complex one.

LightNlife's article is a good one and you might find more info on your MAI type from there and from Jane's forum link.
