Hi guys,

Andrew has been a clindamycin for a couple of weeks, has a couple of days to go. The doctor is trying to get rid of some yellow gunk he's been coughing out due to a staph infection. Well, yesterday his cough, which had subsided a bit, came back with a vengeance and his throat began to hurt. Many kids in his class have been home sick with strep, so a red flag went up. Well, this morning he woke up with no voice, bad cough, fever, and soar throat. I'm almost positive he probably picked up strep at school. Should I let him finish his three days of clindamycin, which still hasn't stopped the yellow gunk, and then take him in for bactrim, which is what they usually give him for strep? He was on bactrim about six weeks ago because we had tried a three week round of that before the clindamycin to beat the staph. I feel like my kiddo is living on antibiotics and I don't like it! Is there a possibility they would put him on two different antibiotics at the same time, one for the strep, another for the staph? I'm not sure if I should wait a few days on the other before taking him in for the strep. Can clindamycin work for the strep as well as the staph? Probably not, since he got it while on the clindamycin. What would you do?

I would continue the clindamycin. Not sure if it actually works on strep, but if the staph is why it was given then one doesnt have anything to do with the other. If he does have strep then they will put him on meds for that.

Remember that not all CF meds will take care of "non CF" things and vice versa. Just because he is on an antibiotic doesnt mean it will take care of another issue that arises for him.

Good Luck & wash those hands. We had a terrible time with strep the ends of last year in our house!

I'd go ahead and take him in if you think he has strep. His doctor will know if he can take 2 antibiotics at the same time if it is strep, or what to do about the antibiotic he's currently on if he can't take it with a strep med (if he needs one).
I hope he's feeling better soon!
