Hello,

My 18 month old has a cold. What can I give him to help with the congestion? I know not to give him a cough suppressant. The on-call doctor (not CF expert) suggested sudafed for children. Thank you. Paula

Good on the no suppressants, have you tried vicks vapor rub on the chest and nose for congestion? Is he/she having a hard time sleeping? I would consider tylenol maybe, babies/toddlers probably get the same headache, sinus congestion and so on that we get as adults. I have no other med suggestions other than some herbal stuff such as echinaceia, and elderberry.

HI, I WOULD ADVISE TO TRY ADVIL OR MOTRIN FOR INFANTS.. ITS THE SAME AS PEOPLE WITH CF AN ADVIL HAS A ANTINFLAMAORTY IN IT THAT HELPS WITH TIGHTNESS, SWELLING. SO IF YOUR SON HAS A COLD AND IS CONGESTED TRY MOTRIN, I SWEAR BY IT IT WILL HELP KEEP EVERYTHING OPEN SO THE CONGESTION CAN BREAK UP AND GET OUT.. I GIVE THAT TO MY SON WHO IS 3 AND NOT CF, BECAUSE I TAKE IT AND HAVE CF.. IT WORKS FOR BOTH OF US...TTYLNOL JUST HELPS PAIN AND FEVERS DOES NOTHING ELSE, THE ADVIL OR MOTRIN HAS THE ANTINFLAMATORY DRUG IN IT TOO..

I know you can give a lil one wcf dimatap. but check with your doctor first and find out the correct dosage for age and weight. that is the only thing i have ever given my child besides albuterol, they may also want to start a antibiotic.

I was told by our doctor under no circumstances to give DS a decongestant to him. Nor should be give him antihistimines. Something about different lining of the cells. We use simply saline -- a compressed air saline -- comes in .9% and 3% (just found that). Tylenol or motrin if he's got a fever. We use vicks vapor rub and Johnson & Johnson's menthol bubble bath. Steam up the bathroom really good and let DS play in the tub to get everything loosened up. We also increase treatments if possible to get that stuff out so it doesn't get in his chest. Also we were told NOT to use a vaporizer 'cuz those can grow nasty mold. Liza

Our CF doctor told us not to use anything like Vic vapor rub or the menthol bubble bath because they irritate the lungs. He said over the counter cold meds were OK (without suppressant), but for an 18 month old I would ask the doctor.

When my daughter has a cold, I increase her CPT or vest therapy(try to fit an extra session in to loosen up any congestion). We also use albuterol neb too. I like to give a warm bath which seems to help her nose run. If she seems really congested at night, I have steamed up the bathroom and that has really helped. Also, elevating her head while she sleeps(use a pillow or bump up the crib). If she continues to have a problem runs a fever just won't stop coughing it would be doctor time for us. But lately the above treatments we have been doing have gotten her through her colds(plus all the other meds she's usually on.)

Take care,
rebecca
