I've posted about this before... DS always had issues with milia -- white bumps like sandpaper on his cheeks. Apparently they're filled with hard seeds of keratin (skin cells) and if removed incorrectly can cause scarring.

We figured DS has enough on his plate to deal with and at his young age, should not have to deal with facial blemishes and possible scarring. I took him to the dermatologist -- correction, it would've taken MONTHS to get him into the dermatologist, so I settled for a nurse practitioner, who at first wouldn't do anything, but I insisted, citing potential for scarring. So DS was put on an ointment (differin) and the milia pretty much disappeared. But I'm not sure if it was the ointment OR the change in weather. By the time I got him into the clinic, it was fall and wasn't outside sweating as much.

So these past few weeks they're back and worse than ever despite washing his face and using the ointment before bed. I did manage to make an appointment with the dermatologist in a few weeks and hopefully we can resolve this issue. Otherwise is age 6 too young to have facials? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

First, the image of Max at the spa with cucumbers on his eyes and pink goo on his face is cracking me up.

I have keratosis pilaris on the backs of my upper arms, as does my oldest daughter, and most of the females in my mom's family. This is an overproduction of keratin that gets trapped in the follicle openings and causes little plugs. These plugs show up just under the skin as white-ish bumps. I do think I read one time that milia is the term when it's on the face (esp. in babies) and KP is used when it's elsewhere on the body.

KP is supposed to flare in the winter, but mine is ALWAYS really bad in the spring and summer. My daughters used to be SO bad in the summer, but hasn't been too bad the last few years.

I've tried urea cream and other ointments, but nothing really seemed to help until I read (in Wikipedia of all places) that triamcinolone is sometimes perscribed for KP. Well! We have that on hand because we use it around Emily's tube when she starts to get granulation tissue.

Now, if my bumps are getting unsightly, (or my duaghter gets an occasional one on her face) I dab on a bit of Emily's cream and it pretty much takes care of it!

I have a nasty habit of picking at stuff, so yes, I have really ugly scarring on my arms from it. I do think that if you can just not pick, the scarring is reduced, but for me that's nearly impossible.

I suspect it has to do in large part with salt/sweat issue. The other night I put one of my clay masks from Origins on him while he was in the tub to see if that helped at all.

At least he doesn't pick at them. Hopefully the dermatologist can get him straightened out.

Hi, this is really interesting, I was searching for an other post, but came across this one. For a long time I have had these white bumps on my face, at first just one or two on the top of my cheek near the eye, but lately that have increased and I have been wondering what they are... I didn't know how to explain them. And have never heard of Milia before.

Does anyone else have this? Could this be CF related, I suppose so as mentioned earlier because of the sweating... It's interesting that what ever little thing I have somehow gets related to CF... I'm learing more and more (I have only been diagnosed a year and a half ago).

Does anyone have some info about this?

DS is going to the dermatolgist in a couple weeks. See if another medication or treatment (facial wash?)can be prescribed.

I suspect it's caused by sweating, the salt and plugged pores. I know they can be removed by a doctor -- usually pricked with a scalpel and pushed out, but I doubt DS would sit still for anything like that, nor would I suspect the doctor would do that on such a small child.

I'll keep you posted.

Zoe had these also...we did the whole dermatologist thing also....finally out of our own research, we read about silver cream. I was not going to accept the dr.s telling me there was little they could do about it...that she would have them until they 'ran their course'. Our kids have enough to deal with without their faces having bumps all over them! The silver cream worked like a charm!!! Got rid of everyone of them and they have not come back!!

Hope ya'll are having a fun summer so far!!
