On another note, Melissa, this has been driving me crazy but what does "IMHO" mean? I have asked my daughter and she has no idea. I have tried and tried figuring it out and I guess I am just out of the loop big time. I know it will end up being so simple.</end quote>

SORRY! I use to hate abbreviations, but I am very loose with them now

Our two year old just started on Colistin so we are on the learning curve with this. All of her other medications are premixed so having to mix it myself makes me a little anxious. My biggest worry is that I am not doing it right.

The only sterile water our local pharmacy could get was in 5ml. We are supposed to use 4ml each time so I just throw out the rest.

Plus our water is in these glass vials that you have to break the top off of to use. The edges are very sharp. It makes me nervous with little kids in the house. The pharmacist that 'tried' to show my husband how to open one made it shatter all over the place!!

It sounds like most of you have water in a different kind of container. Where do you get it? We had a terrible time even finding a pharmacy to supply it for us. We get most of the girls' medications through Medco because of our health insurance. They are supplying us with the colistin, but can't get us the water to mix it!!!!! How ridiculous is that!

Oh we used to get those kind of vials when Anna first start Colistin. They are a pain to use. I hated them. I am not familiar with your insurance but you should try the CFF pharmacy and see if they take your insurance. They take most everyone. Even when we go to Target pharmacy we get the vials with the rubber tops.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! It makes me feel better that there are other people doing it this way and re-using the vials also.

Julie - I also get my colistin and sterile water from the CF Pharmacy. I am looking at the vial of sterile water right now and it is made by a company called Hospira, and labeled Sterile Water for Injection (don't know if that would help you track it down at all.) When I ran out last week and needed it in a pinch I also had a hard time finding it locally. It seems like standard pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens etc. don't carry it (at least not around me.) Where I did end up finding it is a local pharmacy that is attached to to a surgical supply store. So you might try looking into any surgical supply stores in your area.
