Mixing Hypertonic to 7%

Hi... me again ( i know i know... i've got to get a screen name)...

How do those of you who do HS 7% mix it??? I received my first supply the other day, and its little vials of 10% each and .09%.... I know you have to mix 'em, but have no idea how to do this accurately out of the little vials! Do you need to sick a needle in and suck out a certain ratio of each? I'm so confused!

I was given 3 percent and 10 percent vials. Also, it came w/ great directions for mixing. For now I'm just using 3 percent so I haven't been mixing.

Well, mine came from CF Service Pharmacy and didn't come with any instructions other than my doctors' note on the script saying 'mix with 10% saline'.... not very helpful. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

for the 10% and 3% mix i use it is:

3ml of 10%
+
2ml of 3%

not sure about .09%, though...been about 10 years since taking a math class, so no idea on what formula to use to figure it out. actually, the formula i would use is ask your doctor for a 3% script.

I mix 3ml of 10% & 2ml of 3% to get 7%. Have no idea where the .09% came from for you. Sounds like a mix up. Mine came from CF pharmacy with directions so you better check with where you got it from. BTW I dont use syringes. I have been squeezing it out of the vials. Took a bit to get the hang of it, but I didnt want to dispose of more syringes!

I mix 5ml of 10% (1/3 of my 15ml vial) with 1 3ml vial of .9%. This gets 8ml of close to 7%. I neb this for around 20 minutes or so, there is usually a little bit left which I dump out.

Why the mix up? You can dilute the 10% with .9%

I guess I was ASSUMING that all saline for CFers was dispensed only in 10%, 5% or 3% vials making the mix easier. Anything can be calculated & mixed if you know how to do it or are given directions!

You don´t have to get an eactly 7 % mix. Just mix, try to inhale and if its to strong, put some more of the 0,9 % in it.

I buy it premixed but it is expensive...I pay $75 for a month supply. My insurance doesn't cover it yet.

OK, so its not an EXACT science and it doesn't really matter? I know when they did it in the RT office, he used a syringe to get it just perfect. I don't want to do this though. URGH!
