monotherapy vs. synergy

I was on Zosyn once, I was fine on it for two week IV and then I got a real bad reaction called serum sickness from it....

We use that drug a lot in the Emergency room as a first line of choice for comunity aquired pneumonias...

I was really impressed with Nicoles Micro knowledge and happy to see someone else besides me loved Micro...

From what I understand though, you should be covered with two different drugs IV when trying to treat a CF infection.. but maybe they are counting the PO one... and yes when you are taking more then one antibiotic they are going to have a synergestic effect but I do understand what you mean..

Let us know how it turns out

I used Zosyn a lot toward the end of last year. Although my bacteria responded well, my body didnt.

My liver enzymes went sky high, it caused awful belly pains & I could not eat.

I havent been on just one antibiotic for years. I always need a cocktail.

i've been on zosyn and (oral) cipro for my last 3 exaccerbations and it has worked great! in the past i have generally on two IVs with maybe an additional oral. i didn't have any major problems with side effects besdies the usual liquified intestines. zosyn is a mix of pipercillin and taxobactam.

Thank you all for your replies. Yes, catboogie I had forgotten that when I asked my doc about synergy he said in effect zosyn is already a mix of antibiotics. I just don't want to have to do a mycin drug; but, we will check PFT's mid way and see if we have to add something.

Thank you all!
