Mould

I think i heard somewhere that we should avoid mould if we can is this correct? I work for an accountant and have been asked to do someones books that have got wet and now are very mouldy.

It will be awkward to say no so i'm wondering how damaging that could be and would it help to wear a mask and gloves ??

I would wear a mask when working with it honestly. I probably wouldnt worry about gloves, because I would just wash my hands afterwards.

I dont know if being around it can give you the ABPA (asperigillous or whatever, I really butchered that haha), but I would worry about the spores and other particles that will be knocked in the air when flipping through the books.

If you could pass it on to someone else, if possible, I would. To me the risk is not worth it to me.

I tend to avoid mold at all costs, but I am allergic to mold--both indoor and out. I agree about wearing a mask and passing it to someone else if possible.

As for ABPA, being in contact with aspergillus, and possibly even culturing it, does not necessarily mean you have ABPA which is an allergic response to that particular mold. However, I would not want to find out the hard way that you have ABPA. I would switch jobs with someone else if you can, otherwise definitely wear the mask.

Several years ago we had to move out of home temporarily and rent an apartment for 6 months. After moving in the rental I suddenly got sick and my pfts plunged 30 points for no apparent reason. I could hardly walk across the room without gasping for air. After lots of tests and investigating it turned out that black mold was growing in the basement of our rental and making me sick.
Of course this is an extreme case and not the same type of mold as something growing on a book. But after that experience I take mold very seriously.
For your situation I'd wear a mask, and not a surgical mask, one that has a vent in it. I know you won't want to and I get it totally. But its better than getting sick!

I meant, can you get ABPA from mold from a book? or is ABPA like psuedo and just in our environment so you can have it like you said and either have the allergic response or not...

As difficult as these decisions can be sometimes I would have to say that the benefits far out way potential hazzards here. Mould spores are extremely small and even the best droplet precaution mask will not guarantee your safety. Mould can host a variety of very nasty things they could potentially harm you long term, not just aspergilus, but many others - cepacia can come from mould though maybe not mouldy books, I'm not sure exactly. I would do anything to not have cultured aspergilus as for me it has caused far more issues than pseudo or staph. At the end of the day I would be asking myself if the person potentially going to be offended if you decline is going to be there to nurse you back to health if you get sick?! These decisions are always tough but sometimes you have to think of yourself first.
